Engine, Removing

CAUTION!
Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:

Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.

Switch the ignition off.

Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) cable.

On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-off the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery.

After reconnecting vehicle battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio. Also check operation of clock and power windows according to Repair Information and/or Owner's Manual.

After reconnecting vehicle battery on vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-on the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module.

Engine Sling (2024A)

Engine Support Adapter (3147)

Ribbed Belt Install. Tool (3299) with Claw For Tensioner (3299/1)

Drip Tray For VAS6100 (VAS6208) or (V.A.G 1306)

Engine/Transmission Jack (VAG1383A)

Bracket (30-211A) for vehicles with automatic transmission 01V

Old oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782 )

Shop Crane -Load Cap=700-1200Kg (VAS6100)

Support (T10062)

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Insert Pad For Front Fender (T40045) for vehicles with multitronic transmission 01J or automatic transmission 01V





Work procedure

Engine is removed without transmission toward the front with the lock carrier removed.

Heat insulation sleeves removed during engine removal should be reinstalled in the same location when installing engine.

All cable ties opened or cut during engine removal must be reinstalled at the same locations during installation.

Drained coolant must be stored in a clean container for disposal or reuse.

- Shift selector lever into position "N" on a vehicle with multitronic transmission 01J or automatic transmission 01V.

CAUTION!
Observe procedures when disconnecting battery.

- Pull off rubber seal of plenum chamber cover in direction of - arrow -.





- Remove plenum chamber cover - 1 - toward front.

- With ignition switched off, disconnect Battery Ground (GND) cable - arrow -.





CAUTION!
Cover cap of coolant expansion tank with rag and open carefully, as hot steam or hot coolant may escape when opening.

- Open cap of coolant expansion tank.

- Remove both front wheels.

- Remove front bumper cover.

- For vehicles with auxiliary heater, remove bolts - arrows - for exhaust pipe of parking heater/auxiliary heater on noise insulation.





- Loosen screws or quick-release fasteners - 1 - and - 2 - and remove front noise insulation.





- Remove quick-release fasteners - 3 - and remove rear noise insulation, if installed.

- Remove bracket for noise insulation - arrows -.





- Place Drip Tray For VAS6100 (VAS6208) under engine.

Vehicles with drain plug:

- Rotate drain plug - 2 - at cooler toward left and if necessary, position assisting hose on supports and allow coolant to drain.





Vehicles without drain plug:

- Remove securing clamps and remove Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor (on Radiator) (G83) - 3 -.

- Remove Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor (on Radiator) (G83) from supports and drain coolant.

All:

- Pull coolant hose retaining clip - 1 - off downward and disconnect coolant hose from radiator.

- Disconnect left coolant hose from radiator - arrow -.





- Also disconnect coolant hose from oil cooler - arrow - and let rest of coolant drain.





- Place old oil collecting and extracting device ( V.A.G 1782) underneath.

- Disconnect hydraulic lines to cooling coil at rear of bumper - arrows -.





Vehicles with 01J or 01V automatic transmissions





Observe the rules of cleanliness for working on automatic transmissions.

- Place old oil collecting and extracting device ( V.A.G 1782) under connection.

- Remove union nuts - 3 - and disconnect ATF lines.

- Remove ATF line bracket and remove nuts - 1 - and - 2 -.

All:

- Remove cover - 1 - in engine compartment (right side).





- Remove the bolts - arrows -.





- Disengage Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80) - 1 - from air duct.

- Remove the air duct - 2 -.

- Remove cover - 1 - in engine compartment (left side).





- Disconnect upper coolant hose - 1 - from radiator.





- Disconnect electrical harness connector - 2 - for left and right airbag sensors on lock carrier.

- Free up electrical wiring.

- Remove electrical harness connectors - 1 - and - 2 - from bracket.





- Disconnect electrical connectors and free up electrical lines.

- Disconnect electrical connector - arrow - for left and right headlights.





- Remove hood cable from lock carrier.

- Remove left and right air ducts from radiator - arrows -.





- Unclip the Outside Air Temperature Sensor (G17 ) - 2 - from the bracket.





- Remove bolts - 3 - and - 4 - and remove the power steering system cooling coil.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector - 1 - at High Pressure Sensor (G65).

CAUTION!
The air conditioning refrigerant circuit must not be opened.

- Remove the bolts - arrows - for the condenser.

To prevent damage to the refrigerant lines/hoses, ensure that the lines and hoses are not stretched, kinked or bent.

- Pivot the condenser downward with lines connected.

- Remove screws - arrows - at left and right.





- Remove hood seal from lock carrier and from fender bolted flanges.

- Remove bolts - arrows - at left and right impact absorbers.





A second technician is required to remove the lock carrier.

- Remove lock carrier and set aside so it cannot topple.

- Pull rear engine cover off - arrows -.





- Remove solenoid valve retaining plate - 3 - - arrows -.





- Disconnect air duct hose - 1 - at Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor (G70).

- Disconnect crankshaft housing ventilation hose - 4 - from air duct - 2 -.

- Remove screw - arrow - and remove air duct - 2 - from Throttle Valve Control Module (J338).





- If equipped, disconnect hose - 1 - from air duct.

To improve clarity, shown from the rear with the engine removed.

- Disconnect coolant hoses - 1 - and - 2 -.





Coolant hose - 3 - remains connected.

- Remove coolant expansion tank - arrow -.

- Disconnect the electrical line at Engine Coolant Level (ECL) Warning Switch (F66) at bottom of coolant expansion tank.

- Remove Ground (GND) connection - 2 -.





- Pull off the vacuum lines - 1 - and - 3 -.

- Disconnect vacuum line - arrow - to Leak Detection Pump (LDP) (V144) from Throttle Valve Control Module (J338).





Vehicles with 01J or 01V automatic transmissions





- Disconnect electrical harness connector - arrow - on Brake System Vacuum Pump (V192).

All:

- Extract hydraulic oil for power-steering from reservoir using old oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782).

- Disconnect hose - 1 - from power steering fluid reservoir.





- Disconnect vacuum hose - 2 - to vacuum reservoir.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector - bottom arrow - at Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor (V101) and free up electrical wire.





- Disconnect hose from pipe to Secondary Air Injection combi-valve - top arrow -.

Vehicles with fuel return line:

CAUTION!
Fuel system is under pressure! Before opening system, place rags around the connection area. Then release pressure by carefully loosening the connection.

- Disconnect the fuel supply line - 1 - and the fuel return line - 2 -.





- Free up fuel lines.

Vehicles without fuel return line:

CAUTION!
Fuel system is under pressure! Before opening system, place rags around the connection area. Then release pressure by carefully loosening the connection.

- Unscrew fuel hose from connection on fuel rail pipe. To do so, counterhold using an open-end wrench at each hex head - 1 - and - 3 - and unscrew union nut - 2 -.





All:





- Disconnect the following lines and electrical connectors:

1. at Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80)

2. Vacuum hose at Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80)

3. at Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor (G70)

- Disconnect hose connections, free up electrical wires and remove air filter housing - arrows -.

Place a rag under hydraulic pressure lines to catch escaping hydraulic fluid.





- Unscrew power steering hydraulic pressure line from rear coolant pipe - 1 - and disconnect line at height of right cylinder head - 2 -.

- Pry off cover caps - 3 - from wiper arms using a screwdriver.





- Loosen nuts - 4 - on both wiper arms a few turns.

- Loosen wiper arms - 2 - one after another from wiper axle by tilting slightly.

- Unscrew nuts completely and remove wiper arms.

- Disconnect securing clips - 1 - and remove cowl grille - 5 -.

Vehicles with 01J or 01V automatic transmissions

- Disconnect electrical harness connector - arrow - at Brake Booster Pressure Sensor (G294).





All:

- Remove cover for E-Box in plenum chamber - arrows -.





- Pry off retainer bar using a screwdriver - arrow -.





- Loosen connector catches - arrows - and disconnect control module electrical connectors - 1 - and - 2 -.





Vehicles with 01V automatic transmission:

- Disengage transmission control module retaining bracket.

- Disengage connector - arrow - and disconnect from transmission control module.
