End Cover, With Transmission Installed

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Engine support bridge (10-222 A)

Pry lever (80-200)

Triple square socket driver (3357)

Engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A )

Oil receptacle

Removing

Rules of cleanliness for working on transmissions. Refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.

CAUTION!
Do not run the engine with the end cover removed or without Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) filling and do not tow vehicle.

- Place the selector lever in the "P" position.

- Remove the tunnel crossmember. Refer to => [ Transmission Mount and Crossmember ] Service and Repair.





Vehicles With a Oval Connector

- Disengage the harness connector - A - in direction of - arrow - and disconnect it from transmission.





Vehicles With a Round Connector

- Disengage electrical harness connector - 1 - and disconnect it from transmission.





Continuation for All

- Remove bracket - 3 - for the selector lever cable by first removing bolts - 2 -.





- Using the pry lever (80-200), pry the selector lever cable - A - from the lever for the selector shaft - arrow -.





- Remove bolts - 2 - and remove the transmission mount - 1 - from the transmission.





- Remove bolts - arrows - and remove the end cover.





Installing

Installation is in the reverse order of removal, note the following:

Replace sealing rings, seals and bolts for the end cover.

Vehicles With a Round Connector

- Slide a new twin lip oil seal - A - with the twin lips facing outward onto the connector at the Transmission Control Module (TCM) (J217).





Vehicles With a Oval Connector

- Slide a new twin lip oil seal - A - with the twin lips facing outward onto the connector at the Transmission Control Module (TCM) (J217).





Continuation for All

- Clean sealing surfaces on the transmission housing and end cover.

- If bushings were installed in the transmission housing or cover, they must be remounted in the same location.

- Place a new seal for the end cover - A - onto the transmission housing.





There are metal and paper seals. The new seal must be made of the same material as the old one.

Make sure bushings are seated properly.

- Put on end cover and make sure seal does not slip.

- Tighten new bolts - arrows - hand tight and in a diagonal sequence, and then to specifications.





- Check the installation position of the twin lip oil seal - A -:

The twin lip oil seal must fit flush (sealing lips must not be twisted).

- Tighten bolts - 2 - of the bracket - 3 - for the selector lever cable on the transmission.





Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

Lightly grease the eyelet and ball socket of the selector lever cable with polycarbamide grease (G 052 142 A2) before installing.

- Press the selector shaft lever - A - onto the transmission completely toward the rear - arrow - until the parking lock engages.





- Check whether the selector lever is in the "P" position, then press the ball socket of the selector lever cable - 2 - carefully onto the lever for the selector shaft.





Take care not to bend the selector shaft lever when pressing it on; support it as necessary, otherwise the selector mechanism can no longer be adjusted properly.

- Bolt transmission mount - 1 - onto the transmission - 2 -. Refer to => [ Transmission Mount and Crossmember ] Service and Repair.





- Install the tunnel crossmember. Refer to => [ Transmission Mount and Crossmember ] Service and Repair.

- Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable Adjusting ] Adjustments.

- Install the exhaust system and align it free of tension. Refer to

- Fill with ATF. Refer to => [ ATF Changing or Filling after Repairs ] ATF Changing or Filling After Repairs.

Tightening Specifications





* 90° is a quarter turn.
