Airbag Crash Sensors, Servicing

Front Airbag Crash Sensor
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1410)
• Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System ( VAS 5051 A)
CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
1 Front Airbag Crash Sensor
• Removal:
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Depending on engine version, remove air duct if necessary.
- Disengage tab on yellow connector - 3 - and disconnect connector.
- Remove two bolts - 2 - on crash sensor - 1 -.
• Installing:
To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order. Observe the following when doing so:
- Switch on ignition.
CAUTION!
No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.
- Connect the battery ground (GND) strap.
• Follow safety measures after connecting battery.
• If the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ( K75) shows a malfunction after assembly, DTC memory must be checked with Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System ( VAS 5051 A), cleared and then rechecked.

Front Side Airbag Crash Sensor, from November 2004
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1410)
1 Bolt - 5 Nm
2 Front Side Airbag Crash Sensor
• Driver side: Driver-side side airbag crash sensor (G179)
• Passenger side: Passenger-side side airbag crash sensor (G180)
CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions for working on airbags and precautionary measures for crash sensors (pressure sensors) for front side airbag. Refer to => [ Front Side Airbag Crash Sensors Safety Precautions, from November 2004 ] Technician Safety Information.
Removing
- Clamp off ground wire at battery with ignition switched off.
- Remove door trim. Refer to => [ Front Door Trim ] Front Door Trim.
- Disconnect electrical connector - 4 - on crash sensor.
- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 3 -.
- Remove crash sensor for front side airbag.
Installing
Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:
- Switch on ignition.
CAUTION!
No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.
- Connect battery ground strap.
- Follow measures after connecting battery.
• If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (K75) indicates a fault after installation, DTC memory must be checked, deleted and then checked again.

Rear Side Curtain Airbag Crash Sensor

• Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System ( VAS 5051 A)
CAUTION!

1 Rear Side Airbag Crash Sensor
• Removal:
• In the illustration, crash sensor for rear side airbag is depicted on the passenger side. The removal and installation on the driver's side is done in the same way.
- Disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap.
- Remove side upholstery.
- Disengage tab on yellow connector - 3 - and disconnect connector.
- Remove two bolts - 2 - on crash sensor.
• Installing:
To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order. Observe the following when doing so:
- Switch on ignition.

- Connect the battery ground (GND) strap.
• Follow safety measures after connecting battery.
