Condition
Noises from the steering system. May be caused by air which can be drawn into the power steering pump if the power steering fluid is clearly below the minimum mark during cold conditions.
Service
DO NOT replace any power steering system components until the following is checked:
- Verify customers concern.
- Check the power steering fluid level.
- Check system for leaks.
- Check installation of the filter/screen in the reservoir.
- Check for other possible sources of noise such as belt driven engine accessories, their belt tensioner(s) and brackets.
- Ensure that hoses are not rubbing against the body or other components.
Fluid level, checking:
^ With engine cold (outside temp. approx. +20°C / 68°F) fluid must be at MAX level.
^ With engine warm (engine oil temp. 80°C / 176°F) fluid must be 10 mm above MAX level.
Eliminating air bubbles:
- Test drive vehicle.
- Switch ignition OFF.
- Wait 1 minute, then open fluid reservoir and inspect for air bubbles.
If air bubbles are not visible:
^ No air is in the system (air in system is not cause for noise).
If air bubbles are visible:
- Switch ignition OFF and allow vehicle to sit for at least 2 hours.
- Check fluid level and add fluid if necessary.
- Perform test drive again (ensure noise has been eliminated).
When procedure applies to vehicles within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, use the table shown.
