Suspension, Lifting to Curb Weight Position

Suspension, lifting to curb weight position

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A
^ Tensioning strap T10038
^ Wheel hub support T10149

Note:
^ All bolts on suspension components with bonded rubber bushings must always be tightened with the suspension in the curb weight position.

Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent.

Before tightening bolts, suspension components with bonded rubber bushings must be brought into a position corresponding to normal position of the unladen vehicle while driving (curb weight position).

Otherwise, the bushing would be subject to torsion loading and its service life would be shortened.

This position can be simulated on the lifting platform by raising the appropriate part of the suspension with the engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A and wheel hub support T10149.

- Before commencing work, use tape measure or similar to measure dimension - a - from wheel center to lower edge of wheel housing.

This measurement must be taken with suspension in curb weight position (vehicle unladen).
- Make a note of measured value. This will be needed when tightening bolts and/or nuts on suspension.

Before raising wheel unit, secure vehicle to arms of lifting platform using tensioning straps T10038.

If vehicle is not secured, there is a risk of it slipping off lifting platform.
- Turn wheel hub until one of the holes for the wheel bolts is at the top.
- Attach wheel hub support T10149 to wheel hub using wheel bolt.

- Raise wheel bearing housing using engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A until distance - a - is obtained.

The nuts/bolts on the relevant suspension mountings must not be tightened until the distance - a - between the wheel center and the lower edge of the wheel housing is the same as the distance measured before commencing work.

CAUTION!
^ Do not lift or lower the vehicle while the engine/transmission jack is under the vehicle.
^ Do not leave engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A under the vehicle for longer than necessary.

- Tighten relevant nuts/bolts.
- Lower wheel bearing housing.
- Pull out engine/transmission jack from under vehicle.
- Remove wheel hub support T10149.
