Center Console Lamps and Switches
Access/Start Authorization Button
Removing
- On vehicles with automatic transmission, place selector lever in position "S".
- Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
- Remove the Climatronic Control Module (J255).
- Remove gap cover above ashtray - arrow -.
- Open front ashtray.
- Remove the front ashtray insert.
- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Release ashtray - 3 - using a screwdriver - arrow -, attach screwdriver at opening - 4 - to do so.
- Remove housing of front ashtray.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector, if present.
- Reach through opening of ashtray and press out Access/Start Authorization Button (E408) - item 1 - - arrow -.
- Unplug connector.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
- Install the Climatronic Control Module (J255).

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Trim Removal Wedge (3409)
Removing
- Remove rear center console.
- Bring seats into rear most seat position.
- On vehicles with automatic transmission, place selector lever in position "S".
- Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
- Reach from bottom into recesses into recesses at Climatronic Control Module (J255) (control head).
- Pull Climatronic Control Module (J255) (control head) out of mounting frame - arrows -.
- Put Climatronic Control Module (J255) (control head) down on center console on rag to prevent surfaces from damage.
- Disconnect electrical harness connectors in sequence - A through D - by releasing catches - F -.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector - E -.
- Remove gap cover above ashtray - arrow -.
- Open front ashtray.
- Remove the front ashtray insert.
- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Release ashtray - 3 - using a screwdriver - arrow -, attach screwdriver at opening - 4 - to do so.
- Remove housing of front ashtray.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector, if present.
- Unclip boot - 1 - for gearshift lever or selector lever on both sides and pull off upward - arrows -.
Vehicles with automatic transmission:
- Release retaining spring - 2 - and remove Selector Lever Transmission Range (TR) Position Display (Y26) - item 1 - upward.
- Unplug connector.
All:
- Remove screws - arrows -.
- Slightly lift front center console - 1 - at rear and pull off of instrument panel toward rear.
- Unplug connectors.
- Remove screws - arrows -.
- Carefully release clips - 1 through 3 - and - 6 - at decorative frame - 5 - using a small screwdriver.
- Remove decorative frame with Multimedia Control Head (E380) - 4 - upward from front center console.
- Remove screws - arrows -.
- Remove Parking Brake Pressure Switch (F234) - 1 - at the switch trim.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
- Install rear center console. Refer to

Transmission Selector Range Position Display
Removing
- Position selector lever in "N" position.
- Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
- Unclip mounting frame for selector lever boot - 1 - from center console and lift it upward - arrows -.
- Fold selector lever boot upward.
- Release retaining spring - 2 - and remove Selector Lever Transmission Range (TR) Position Display (Y26) - item 1 - - arrow -.
- Unplug connector.
Installing
Install in reverse order.
Special Signal Switch, A6
Removing
- Remove the mat - 3 -.
- Remove bolt - 1 -.
- Remove the rear cup holder - 2 - from the center console.
- Disconnect electrical connectors - 1 to 4 -.
- Open the clips and remove the special signal switch from the cup holder.
Installing
Install in reverse order.
Rear Heated Seat Regulating Switches
Removing
- Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
- Remove the rear vents in the center console..
- Reach through opening and release clips - arrows -.
- Remove the switch (E128) - 2 - and the switch (E129) - 1 - from the mount.
• Shown in illustration with rear center console removed.
- Unplug connector.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
- Install the rear vents in the center console. Refer to=> Body Interior 68 Removal and Installation.
Alarm Switch in Rear Center Console, A6
Removing
- Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
- Remove the rear vents in the center console..
- Disconnect the connector - 2 - rear center console alarm switch.
- Reach through opening and release the clips.
- Remain the rear center console alarm switch - 1 - and - 3 - from the mount.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
- Install the rear vents in the center console. Refer to=> Body Interior 68 Removal and Installation.
Ashtray Lamp
Removing
- On vehicles with automatic transmission, place selector lever in position "S".
- Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
- Remove the Climatronic Control Module (J255). Refer to=> Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning 87 Removal and Installation.
- Remove gap cover above ashtray - arrow -.
- Open front ashtray.
- Remove the front ashtray insert.
- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Release ashtray - 3 - using a screwdriver - arrow -, attach screwdriver at opening - 4 - to do so.
- Remove housing of front ashtray.
- Unplug connector.
- Release retaining wedge - 2 - in - direction of arrow - and remove ashtray illumination - 1 - toward rear.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
- Slide ashtray illumination into mount until retaining wedge engages.
- Install the Climatronic Control Module (J255).
