Backrest Cover and Upholstery
CAUTION!
Observe the safety precautions for repairs on airbags.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Upholstery clip pliers (V.A.G 1634)
• Drill machine
• Protective eyewear
• Drill bit dia. 12 mm
Cover and Upholstery, Separating from Backrest Frame
1 Side fastening strip
2 Side airbag connector
3 Locking tab
4 Side airbag, driver/passenger side
5 Rivet
6 Protective cover for side airbag
7 Bolt
• Tightening specification 10 Nm
• replace after each disassembly
8 Cover and upholstery
• Removing
- Disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap =>.
- Remove seat => [ Power Front Memory Seat ] Power Front Memory Seats.
- Remove on vehicles with a DVD player => [ DVD Player Guide, Removing and Installing ].
- Remove the backrest => [ Front Backrest ] Power Front Memory Seats.
- Remove headrest => [ Headrests with Locking Mechanism ] Power Front Memory Seats.
- Remove headrest guides => [ Headrest Guides ] Front Seat Covers and Upholstery, Power Memory Seats.
- Remove backrest cover panel => [ Backrest Cover ] Power Front Memory Seats.
- Pry out lower grip channels - 12 - (Qty. 3).
- Disengage side fastening strips - 10 - (Qty. 2) and - 11 - (Qty. 2).
- Remove upper fastening strips - 9 - (Qty. 2).
- Cut upholstery clips - 13 - (Qty. 4) at protective cover for side airbag - 6 -.
- Press latch - 3 - downward and disconnect electrical harness connector for side airbag - 2 -.
- Remove screw - 7 -.
- Drill out rivet - 5 -.
- Push side airbag - 4 - up and remove.
- Remove wiring harness upward.
- Remove adhesive tape from wiring harness.
- Remove backrest heating cable from backrest frame.
- Remove upholstery with cover.
• Installing
To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order. When doing so, note the following:
- Make sure that airbag cable - 16 - runs through cable guide - 17 - and is secured by clip - 15 - to backrest frame.
- Use upholstery clip pliers (V.A.G 1634) to install new upholstery clips on protective cover for side airbag.

DVD Player Guide, Removing and Installing
Removing
• DVD player removed.
- Unclip the trim - 2 - for the connector - arrow -.
- Drill out the guides - 1 - and - 3 - for the DVD player using a 12 mm drill dia..
CAUTION!
Danger of destroying the backrest cover and cushion.
• The guides are held in the backrest frame by the retaining tabs - arrows -.
• When removing, drill out only up to dimension - a - = 35 mm.
Installing
• The guide mounts - 1 - and - 3 - on the backrest must free of contaminants.
- Align the backrest cover and install the guides into the mounts.
• The guides - 1 - and - 3 - can be installed in only one position.
• The release buttons must face outside.
- Install the trim - 2 -.
• The trim can be installed in only one position.
• Ignore the - arrow -.

- Cut upholstery clips - 3 -.
- Remove cover - 1 -.
• Installing
To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order. When doing so, note the following:
- When installing new upholstery clips, use Upholstery Clip Pliers (V.A.G 1634).
