Coil Spring Suspension Strut with Mounting Bracket
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)
• CV joint boot clamp tool (T40067)
Removing
- Remove wheel trim cap, remove cover cap on light-alloy wheels (removal hook in vehicle tool kit).
- Remove the wheel.
- If the vehicle has Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), disconnect the connector - 8 - on the shock absorber, remove it from the bracket and bleed the system. Refer to => [ Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), Draining and Filling ] Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), Draining and Filling. Remove the union nut - 5 - and free up the hose line - 1 -.
- In vehicles with level control system sensor, unscrew nut - 6 -.
- Remove clip - 1 - with a pair of pliers.
• This clip does not need to be inserted again.
- Disconnect the threaded connection - 2 -, remove hex bolt and remove both control arms upward.
• The slits in the wheel bearing housing must not be widened using a chisel or similar tool!
- Remove the hex bolt - arrow - suspension strut/track control arm.
- Pivot wheel bearing housing away to the side and guide out fork head at track control arm.
- If equipped, loosen the coolant reservoir mounting - arrow -, unclip the reservoir and move it to the side.
- Remove plenum chamber cover.
- Remove cover - arrow - of bolt.
- Remove the bolts - 1 - in the plenum chamber.
- Take out suspension strut with mounting bracket.
• Be careful not to damage CV boot in the process!
Installing
- Insert suspension strut with mounting bracket into suspension turret.
• Always observe the tightening sequence for the mounting bracket threaded connection with the suspension strut to the suspension strut tower.
- Tightening specification of threaded connection depicted as numbered is mandatory. Refer to => [ Coil Spring Suspension Strut, Mounting Bracket and Upper Control Arm Assembly Overview ] Removal and Replacement.
- Install cover - arrow - of bolt.
- Install plenum chamber cover.
• The threaded connection must only be tightened when the vehicle is in curb weight position.
- Insert fork head of suspension strut in track control arm and tighten threaded connection - 1 -. Refer to => [ Coil Spring Suspension Strut, Mounting Bracket and Upper Control Arm Assembly Overview ] Removal and Replacement.
• Screw must be inserted opposite direction of travel.
- Insert both linkage stubs of upper control arms in wheel bearing housing and tension as far as possible downward using (T40067).
- Insert new bolt - 2 - and self-locking nut and tighten. Refer to => [ Coil Spring Suspension Strut, Mounting Bracket and Upper Control Arm Assembly Overview ] Removal and Replacement.
- In vehicles with level control system sensor, screw on nut - 6 -.
- If the vehicle has Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), connect the connector on the shock absorber, mount it in the bracket and fill the system. Refer to => [ Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), Draining and Filling ] Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), Draining and Filling.
- Mount wheel and tighten.
- On vehicles with automatic headlamp range control system, perform a basic setting on the headlamps.
- On vehicles with air suspension, adapt the control position. Refer to => [ Self-Leveling Suspension Control Position, Programming ] Self-Leveling Suspension Control Position, Programming.
