Air Spring
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1783)
• Insert tool 10 (V.A.G 1783/1)
• Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051 B) with corresponding diagnostic cable.
• Spring tensioning system (VAS 6274/8) from spreader device (VAS 6274)
Removing
- Place the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.
- Perform system vent using (VAS 5051 A). Refer to => [ System, Venting or Filling ] System, Venting or Filling.
- Remove the wheel.
- Insert (VAS 6274/8) in correct position between body frame and upper control arm and pre-load lightly.
• The milled surface of the upper press piece must always point in the direction of travel. If not, the brake line will get damaged.
- Loosen the bolt - 1 - and pull wheel house liner to the side.
- Slowly loosen air line - 1 - from the line connector - 2 - and allow air pressure to escape. After the air pressure has escaped, remove the air line.
- Unclip the air line - 1 - and disconnect the cable tie.
- Compress the air spring by hand.
- Loosen the bolt - 1 - 5 to 6 turns.
- Press air spring out of trapezium control arm via socket attachment - direction of arrow -.
Air spring must be removed from trapezium control arm only by pressing via the socket attachment. Do not hit the socket attachment.
- Remove bolts - 1 - completely.
• The air spring can be compressed when being removed or installed.
- Lift air spring - 1 - upward out of trapezium control arm, tilt outward - direction of arrow - and remove.
- Replace the air line.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Air Suspension Assembly Overview ] Air Suspension Assembly Overview.
- Clean inside of trapezium control arm at points where air spring makes contact.
- Tab - 1 - on air spring must be positioned into groove - 2 - of trapezium control arm.
- Fill the system using the (VAS 5051 A). Refer to => [ System, Venting or Filling ] System, Venting or Filling.
- Remove the spreader device (VAS 6274/8).
- Install wheel.
- Place vehicle on wheels. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.
- Tighten wheel.
