General Repair Information

General Repair Information

To perform a problem-free and successful transmission repair, extreme caution and cleanliness, as well as properly functioning tools are an important requirement. Understandably, general safety guidelines apply when performing repairs.

A number of generally applicable instructions for individual repair procedures, which are otherwise mentioned at various points in the repair information, are summarized under the term components. They apply for this repair information.

Contact Corrosion

Contact corrosion can occur when incorrect fasteners (bolts, nuts, washers, etc.) are used.

For this reason, only fastening elements with a special surface coating are installed.

In addition, rubber or plastic parts and adhesive are made of non-conductive materials.

If there are doubts as to whether parts should be reinstalled, install new parts.

We recommend only using original replacement parts, they have been tested and are compatible with aluminum.

We recommend using Audi accessories.

Damage due to contract corrosion is not covered under warranty!

Vehicle Jack Mode with Air Suspension

Before raising a vehicle with air spring suspension on a 2-pillar lifting platform (wheels off the ground), first activate the vehicle jack mode.

Components

Rear Final Drive

When replacing the rear final drive, check and if necessary, correct oil level in final drive. Refer to => [ Rear Final Drive Gear Oil, Checking ] Service and Repair.

Capacities and specifications, refer to => [ Specifications ] Rear Final Drive 01R (01AA,01EA,02XA,0A3A,01VA,09EA,09LA Transmission)

Clean the contact surfaces before installing the brackets and waxed components. Contact surfaces must be free of wax and grease.

Thoroughly clean all connections and the surrounding area before disconnecting.

O-rings, Seals and Gaskets

Always replace the O-rings, seals and gaskets.

Check the contact surfaces on the housing and shaft for burrs and damage after removing the seals.

Thoroughly clean the separating surfaces on the housing before assembling.

Before installing, lightly oil the outer circumference of radial-shaft seals and fill gap between sealing lips - arrow - half way with sealing grease (G 052 128 A1).

The open side on the shaft seals faces the fluid to be sealed off.

Lightly lubricate O-rings before installing, this prevents the rings from being pinched when inserting.

Check transmission oil level after replacing gaskets and seals. Refer to => [ Rear Final Drive Gear Oil, Checking ] Service and Repair.

Circlips

Do not stretch the circlips.

Always replace damaged or stretched circlips.

The circlips must touch the bottom of the groove.

Replace the adapter sleeves. Installation position: Slot - A - is longitudinal to line of force - arrow -.

Bolts and Nuts

Loosen and tighten the bolts and nuts of covers and housings in a diagonal sequence.

Do not cant, rather loosen and tighten especially sensitive parts in diagonal manner in stages.

Tightening specifications for unoiled bolts and nuts are given.

Always replace self-locking nuts and bolts.

Using a wire brush, clean threads of bolts (replace outer driveshaft bolts) which are secured with locking compound. Install the bolts with locking fluid (AMV 185 101 A1).

If self-locking bolts were installed or if regular bolts were installed with locking fluid, then the threaded holes must be cleaned with a thread cutter. If the holes are not cleaned, then the bolts could break off the next time they are removed.

Rubber Mount

Position the needle bearing with the lettered side (larger metal thickness) facing the thrust piece.

Install the new tapered roller bearing and do not oil it.

Replace the tapered roller bearings together and use bearings made by the same manufacturer.

Lightly grease the bearing seats with transmission fluid before installing the bearings on the shafts.

Lightly coat the bearing seats with transmission fluid before installing the bearings and/or the bearing outer races into the transmission housing.

Warm the inner races to approximately 100 °C (212 °F) before installing.

Do not mix up the outer and inner races for the large bearings. The bearings are paired.

Shims

Measure the shims with a micrometer at several locations. The different tolerances make it possible to measure the shim thickness exactly.

Check for burrs and for damage.

Install undamaged shims only.
