Rear Final Drive

Rear Final Drive

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1332)

• Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with Universal Transmission Support (V.A.G 1359/2)

Removing

Refer to general repair instructions. Refer to => [ General Repair Information ] Procedures.

- Remove the rear section of the exhaust system started at the clamping sleeves - arrows -.





- Check whether there is a marking (colored marking) on driveshaft and at flange/driveshaft at rear final drive.





- If this marking is not present, then mark in color the position of driveshaft flange - arrow A - to rear final drive - arrow B -.

- Unbolt driveshaft from rear final drive. Refer to => [ Drive Shaft, Removing from Rear Final Drive and Installing ] Drive Shaft, Removing from Rear Final Drive and Installing.

- Disconnect driveshaft from rear final drive and tie it up - arrow -.





- Remove right and left shielding plates from rear final drive - arrows -.





- Remove the right and left drive axles.

- Place (V.A.G 1383 A) with (V.A.G 1359/2) under rear final drive.





- Secure rear final drive using strap to universal transmission support.

- Unscrew securing bolts from transmission support - arrows -.





- Remove securing bolts - arrow A - and - arrows B - from cross member.





• Bolt - arrow A - remains in crossmember.

- Lower final drive slightly.





- Turn rear final drive slightly to the side and pull half shafts out of flange shafts alternately on each side.

- Lower rear final drive out of vehicle.

Install the Rear Final Drive - Audi A4, Audi Cabriolet and Audi A6





Installation is in reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:

- Turn rear final drive to the side.

- Lift rear final drive and fit half shafts into flange shafts alternately on each side.

- Install securing bolt - arrow A - and tighten lightly to start with.





- Install securing bolts - arrow B -.

- Tighten the bolts - arrow A - and - arrows B -. Tightening specification - 4 - => [ Allen Head Bolt ] Rear Final Drive Assembly Overview.

- Tighten the bolts for the transmission support - arrows -. Tightening specification - 11 - => [ Allen Head Bolt ] Rear Final Drive Assembly Overview.





- Install driveshaft.





- Install right and left heat shields on for the rear final drive - arrows -. Tightening specification - 11 - => [ Allen Head Bolt ] Rear Final Drive Assembly Overview.

- Replace the flange/driveshaft seal and tighten the driveshaft to the rear final drive making sure the markings align => [ Install the driveshaft on the
rear final drive. ] Drive Shaft, Removing from Rear Final Drive and Installing.

- Axle oil level in rear final drive, checking => [ Gear Oil in Rear Final Drive, Checking ] Testing and Inspection.

- Install rear section of exhaust system.
