Shock Absorber







Shock Absorber

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench 40-200 Nm (V.A.G 1332)

Removing

- Measure dimension from center of wheel to lower edge of wheel housing. Refer to => [ Rear Suspension, Lifting to Curb Weight Position ] Rear Suspension, Lifting to Curb Weight Position.

- Remove the wheel.

- Remove wheel housing liner.

- Remove coil spring. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] Coil Spring.

- On vehicles with electronic damping (Audi magnetic ride), disconnect the left connector - 2 - - A -.






- A - Left shock absorber

- B - Right shock absorber

- On vehicles with electronic damping (Audi magnetic ride), disconnect the right connector - 4 - and remove it from its retainer - 3 -, illustration - B -.

- Remove the bolts - arrows -.






- Remove the bolt - 2 - and washer - 1 -.






The washer - 1 - is installed on vehicles with an aluminum wheel bearing housing.

- Remove shock absorber.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Bolting bumper to wheel bearing housing must only occur after dimension measured before installation between the wheel hub center and the lower edge of wheel housing has been attained. Refer to => [ Rear Suspension, Lifting to Curb Weight Position ] Rear Suspension, Lifting to Curb Weight Position.

- On vehicles with electronic damping (Audi magnetic ride), connect the left connector - 2 - and install it in its retainer, illustration - A -.






- A - Left shock absorber

- B - Right shock absorber

- Depending on the shock absorber installed, on vehicles with electronic damping (Audi magnetic ride), connect the right connector - 4 - and install it from its retainer - 3 -, illustration - B -.

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Subframe, Lower Transverse Link, Upper Transverse Link, Tie Rod and Level Control System Overview ] Subframe, Lower Transverse Link, Upper Transverse Link, Tie Rod and Level Control System Overview.

- Axle alignment is required, see Table => [ An axle alignment is necessary when: ] Wheel Alignment.

- On vehicles with electronically-controlled damping (Audi magnetic ride), reprogram the control position using the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system (VAS 5051).
