ATF Draining or Filling after Repair

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Oil collecting and extracting device (VAG 1782)

ATF filler tool (VAG 1924)

Protective glasses

Procedure

The engine is switched off.

- Move the vehicle onto a hoist or over a work pit so that it is absolutely level.

- Fill the reservoir of the ATF filler tool (VAG 1924) with Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) for the automatic transmission 09L.

CAUTION!
The ATF filler tool must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with any other ATF's!

Using different ATF's will destroy the transmission.

- Secure the ATF filler tool (V.A.G 1924) reservoir as high as possible on the vehicle.

- Remove the rear noise insulation by loosening the fasteners - 2 - and, if equipped, the - arrow -.

Draining the ATF

- Place the used oil collection and extraction device (VAG 1782) under the transmission.

CAUTION!
Wear protective glasses.

- Remove the ATF drain plug - arrow A -.

- Drain the ATF completely.

Observe disposal regulations.

The engine must not be started and the vehicle must not be towed if there is no ATF in the transmission!

The drain plug (with seal) must be replaced.

- Install the new oil pan drain plug - arrow A - and tighten to 12 Nm.

Filling with ATF

- Remove the ATF inspection plug - arrow B -.

- Guide the filler hook of the ATF filler tool (VAG 1924) into the opening - arrow - of the protective cap, do not push cap up and in while doing so.

- Add the ATF using the ATF filler tool (VAG 1924) until ATF exits from the check hole.

- Place the selector lever in the "P" position.

- Start the engine.

CAUTION!
Let the engine idle for approximately 20 seconds and then turn it off again.

It is necessary to let the engine run for a short period and then to turn it off so that the ATF does not take in any air which would cause the ATF to foam up. The ATF level would then be incorrect.

- Continue to add ATF using the ATF filler tool (V.A.G 1924) until ATF exits again from the check hole.

- Start the engine and allow it to run at idle.

- Continue to add ATF using the ATF filler tool (V.A.G 1924) with the engine running until ATF with exits again from the check hole.

- Install and tighten the ATF inspection plug.

- With the engine idling, press the brake pedal and shift the selector lever through all the selector lever positions, leaving the selector lever in each position for at least 10 seconds.

- Place the selector lever in the "N" position.

- Increase the engine speed to 2000 RPM's and maintain for at least 60 seconds.

- Place the selector lever in the "P" position.

Observe all notes and test requirements for "Checking ATF level and correcting".

- Check the ATF level. Refer to => [ ATF Level Checking and Correcting ] 09LA Automatic Transmission.
