Removing

Suspension strut (air spring suspension) is removed together with mounting bracket and upper control arms.

During assembly work, ensure no pressure points are created on suspension strut (air suspension) boot.

- Place the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.

- Perform system vent using (VAS 5051 A). Refer to => [ System, Venting or Filling ] System, Venting or Filling.

- Remove wheel trim cap, remove cover cap on light-alloy wheels (removal hook in vehicle tool kit).

- Remove the wheel.

- Clean air connection area.

- Remove the connection - 1 - on the residual pressure retaining valve - 2 -, and unclip the air line on the suspension strut.

Generally, residual pressure valve - 2 - must not be loosened or removed.

- Seal both connections. Make sure that no dust particles enter connections.

- Remove clip - 3 - with a pair of pliers.

This clip does not need to be inserted again.

- Remove the nut - 1 -, the bolt - 2 - and both control arms - 3 - upward.

- Do not widen the slits in the wheel bearing housing using a chisel or similar tool.

- Remove the coupling rod of level control system sensor - 6 - from track control arm.

- Remove the bolt - 1 - and guide suspension strut fork out of track control arm.

- Carefully unclip and disconnect harness connector - 2 -.

- If equipped, loosen the coolant reservoir mounting - arrow -, unclip the reservoir and move it to the side.

- Remove plenum chamber cover.

- Remove cover - arrow - of bolt.

- Remove the bolts - 1 - in the plenum chamber.

- Take out suspension strut with mounting bracket.

When removing the suspension strut (air suspension), make sure the protective sleeves on the steering, drive axle and air suspension strut are not damaged.

If the suspension strut (air suspension) must be replaced, note. Refer to => [ Air Suspension Strut, Filling ] Front Suspension.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

During assembly work, ensure no pressure points are created on suspension strut (air suspension) boot.

- First secure the suspension strut (air suspension) to the body.

The mounting bracket guides must sit in the body bushings.

- Tightening specification of threaded connection depicted as numbered is mandatory.

- Insert both linkage stubs of upper control arm - 2 - into wheel bearing housing - 3 - and tension as far as possible downward using (T40067).

- Tighten the bolt - 1 -.

Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent. Only tighten suspension screws when vehicle is in the control position.

For vehicles with air spring suspension, lift wheel suspension in control position. Refer to => [ Wheel Bearing, with Air Suspension, Lifting to Curb Weight Position ] Wheel Bearing, with Air Suspension, Lifting to Curb Weight Position.

- Install wheel.

- Place vehicle on wheels. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.

- Tighten wheel.

- Adapt the control position. Refer to => [ Self-Leveling Suspension Control Position, Programming ] Self-Leveling Suspension Control Position, Programming.

- Install the plenum chamber cover.

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Air Suspension Strut, Mounting Bracket and Upper Control Arm Assembly Overview ] Front Suspension.
