Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 91 number 09-44 dated June 29, 2009 for reasons listed below.

Affected Vehicles

Condition

Vehicles with a glove box-mounted Apple(R) iPod adapter (PR number UF1) are affected.

When using an iPod Nano (fourth generation) or iPod Touch (second generation) with the iPod adapter, the iPod battery is not charged; however, all playback functions are correct. The iPod device is properly connected to the adapter using the correct shims, if applicable.

Technical Background

Older iPod devices can be charged using either 12 Volt or 5 Volt circuits. As the vehicle electrical system is 12 Volts, only this charging circuit was used by the iPod adapter.

Newer iPod models can only be charged with the 5 Volt circuit. Therefore charging via the original iPod adapter is not possible.

Production Solution

Not applicable.

Service

A modified iPod adapter that charges newer generation iPod devices is now available.

This new iPod adapter, which charges the iPod devices when docked in the interface in the vehicle, can be installed.

^ Vehicles with Navigation plus (RNS-E) up to and including MY 2009:
Use iPod adapter 8E0 857 925H 6PS.

^ Vehicles with radio (Concert, Symphony):
Use iPod adapter 8E0 857 925G 6PS.

Tip:

Audi A4 (8E) & A4 Cabriolet (8H):

iPod Touch 1G and 2G are not supported, as the glove compartment cannot be closed when the device is connected without damaging the electrical contacts.

Audi A3, TT, A4 (8E) & A4 Cabriolet (8H):

iPhone devices are not supported as the glove compartment cannot be properly closed when they are connected.
