Axle Shaft Assembly: Description and Operation
Drive Axle with 88/98 mm Diameter Outer CV Joint and 100/108 mm Diameter Inner CV Joint with Cap
1 Cover
• Carefully remove the cover using a drift, replace if damaged.
• The adhesive surfaces on the cover/inner CV joint must be free of grease when installing.
• Coat the sealing surface with sealant before installing the CV joint.
2 Locking Ring
• Remove and install with commercially-available circlip pliers
• Always replace if removed.
3 Inner CV Joint
• Replace only as complete unit
• Checking, refer to => [ Inner CV Joint, Checking ] Inner CV Joint, Checking
• Grease quantity and type
• The adhesive surfaces must be free of oil and grease
• When installing joint on axle shaft, splines on axle shaft must be lightly coated with grease used in joint.
4 Inner CV Boot with a Cap
• Without ventilation bore
• Carefully remove the cap using a drift, replace if damaged.
• Check the inner CV joint if there is damage. Refer to => [ Inner CV Joint, Checking ] Inner CV Joint, Checking.
• The sealing surfaces on the cap/inner CV joint must be free of grease when installing.
5 Locking Plate
6 Bolt
• 70 Nm
• Always replace if removed.
• M 10
7 Clamp
• Always replace if removed.
• Tensioning => [ Tightening Clamps on Inner Joint ] Rear Suspension
8 Drive Axle
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Drive Axle ] Drive Axle
9 Clamp
• Always replace if removed.
• Tensioning => [ Install the Clamp on the 88 mm or 100 mm Outer Joint ] 88 mm Diameter or 100 mm Diameter Outer CV Joint, Replacing
10 Outer CV Boot
• Without ventilation bore
• Check for tears and chafing; replace if necessary
• The protective boot/metal cap sealing surfaces must be free of grease when installing.
• The protective boot/drive axle sealing surfaces must be free of grease when installing.
11 Clamp
• Always replace if removed.
• Tensioning => [ Install the Clamp on the 88 mm or 100 mm Outer Joint ] 88 mm Diameter or 100 mm Diameter Outer CV Joint, Replacing
12 Locking Ring
• Always replace if removed
• Allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog
• Insert before mounting in ring groove (not visible with joint installed)
• Before installing CV joint, align sealing ring in center with opening facing upward.
13 Outer CV Joint
• Replace only as complete unit
• Driving off, refer to => [ 88 mm Diameter or 100 mm Diameter Outer CV Joint, Replacing ] 88 mm Diameter or 100 mm Diameter Outer CV Joint, Replacing
• Installing: Drive onto shaft using plastic hammer until compressed circlip seats.
• Circlip must lie in joint chamfer when guiding in, guide with pliers if necessary.
• Grease quantity and type
• The protective boot/CV joint sealing surfaces must be free of grease when installing.
• When installing joint on axle shaft, splines on axle shaft must be lightly coated with grease used in joint.
14 Bolt
• 200 Nm + 180° turn
• Always replace if removed.
• Follow the assembly information when loosening and tightening. Refer to => [ Threaded Connection Between Drive Axle and Wheel Hub, Loosening and Tightening ] Procedures.
Grease Quantity and Type
Grease joint when replacing CV boot.
Pack the joint with grease, refer to the Parts Catalog.
• Note that the outer and inner joints use different types of grease.
