Passive Occupant Detection System
Passive Occupant Detection System
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror (80 - 200)
• Follow all safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components, refer to => [ Restraint System Components ] Description and Operation and on the passenger occupant detection system. Refer to => [ Passive Occupant Detection Sensor, Additional Safety Precautions ] Passive Occupant Detection Sensor, Additional Safety Precautions.
• Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
The passenger occupant detection system service kit is precalibrated and must not be disconnected. The service kit consists of:
• Passive Occupant Detection System Control Module -J706
• Passive Occupant Detection System Pressure Sensor -G452
• Passive Occupant Detection System Mat
• Seat cushion
• Wiring harness between the passive occupant detection system control module -J706 and passive occupant detection system pressure sensor -G452.
Removing
- Move the seat height to the middle position before removing the seat.
- Remove the front passenger seat. Refer to => [ Power Standard Front Seat ] Power Standard Front Seat.
- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) cable with the ignition switched on.
- Attach the front seat to the fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136) => [ Installing the Front Seat on VAS 6136 ] Installing the Front Seat On VAS 6136.
- Remove the front backrest:
• Standard seat and Sport seat (manual), refer to => [ Front Backrest ] Front Backrest.
• Standard seat and sport seat (power), refer to => [ Backrest ] Backrest.
Do not disconnect the electrical connectors on the seat occupied recognition pressure sensor (G452) and the seat occupied recognition control module (J706).
- Using a narrow screwdriver, carefully press the seat occupied recognition pressure sensor (G452) - item 3 - off the bracket - arrow -.
- Open the seat occupied recognition pressure hose guide - 1 - and free up the pressure hose - 2 -.
- Remove the screw - 2 - and remove the Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706) - 1 - from the retainer.
- Disconnect the safety belt latch connector from the bracket by pressing the release and removing the electrical connector.
- Free up the wiring harness.
- Remove the bolt - 3 -.
- Remove the front passenger seat position sensor (G554) - item 2 - while guiding the guide tab - arrow - out of the seat pan lower frame - 1 -.
- Remove the seat pan cover and cushion (seat pan without seat depth adjustment) and carefully fold it to the side. Refer to => [ Cover and Upholstery, Seat Pan without Seat Depth Adjustor ] Cover and Upholstery, Seat Pan Without Seat Depth Adjustor.
- Carefully pry out the seat occupied recognition mat clips - 1 - and - 3 - on the front of the seat pan using a (80 - 200).
- Remove the seat pan cover and cushion by first guiding the passenger occupant detection system pressure sensor (G452) together with the wiring harness out through the opening in the seat pan. Then the passenger occupant detection system control module (J706) must be guided out through the opening.
Damage risk.
• Do not bend the seat occupied recognition pressure hose and mat.
- Remove the seat pan cover with upholstery with the seat occupied recognition mat - 2 -, the seat occupied recognition pressure sensor (G452) and the seat occupied recognition control module (J706).
- Remove the cover from the cushion (seat pan). Refer to => [ Backrest Cover, Removing from Cushion ] Backrest Cover, Removing From Cushion.
Do not separate the seat pan cushion from the seat occupied recognition mat.
Installing
Do not disconnect the electrical connectors on the seat occupied recognition pressure sensor (G452) and the seat occupied recognition control module (J706).
Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:
• Follow all safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components, refer to => [ Restraint System Components ] Description and Operation and on the passenger occupant detection system. Refer to => [ Passive Occupant Detection Sensor, Additional Safety Precautions ] Passive Occupant Detection Sensor, Additional Safety Precautions.
• Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, connecting electrical connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
• Do not bend the seat occupied recognition pressure hose and mat.
• Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.
Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.
- Connect the battery GND cable with the ignition turned on.
When installing a new service kit and after each repair on the front passenger seat where the seat and/or the backrest cover is disengaged, a basic setting procedure must be performed on the seat occupied recognition control module. Refer to => [ Passive Occupant Detection Sensor, Additional Safety Precautions ] Passive Occupant Detection Sensor, Additional Safety Precautions.
- To complete, select the "Airbag" function in "Guided Fault Finding" using the vehicle diagnostic tester.
