• Thrust Piece (3253/6) qty. 2
• Locking Pliers (VAS 6199)
• Box End Wrench Insert (V.A.G 1923)
• Hose Clamp Pliers (V.A.G 1275)
• Universal Dial Gauge (VW 387)
• Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaner for example (V.A.G 1373)

Removing
- Remove steering gear. Refer to => [ Steering Gear ] Steering Gear.
- Clean steering gear in mechanical thrust piece adjustment screw area and steering pinion cover.
- Clamp the steering gear as illustrated.
1. (VW 540/2)
2. (3253/6) (quantity: 2)
- Position the steering gear so it is in the straight position.
- Drill the 6 peenings out using a 4 mm drill bit until reaching dimension - a -.
Do not drill deeper than 3 mm dimension - a -.
- Vacuum up drill shavings completely from steering gear housing using for example (V.A.G 1373).
- Remove the adjustment screw.
- Remove spring and sealing ring - arrow -.
- Remove thrust piece from steering gear housing, for example with (1847-2).
• Replace the steering gear if there is corrosion, damage or wear on the steering rack.
Installing and Adjusting
- Coat the new thrust piece - arrow - (contact surface to rack), gasket and hole in the steering gear housing - arrow - with the grease (G 052 192 A1) provided.
• Do not use other grease under any circumstances.
- Insert thrust piece in steering gear housing.
- Install new sealing ring - arrow - and new spring.
- Tighten new adjustment screw to 40 Nm.
- Peen the adjustment screw 6 times using a punch.
• Punch points must be applied 2 graduation lines next to the drill out punch points.
- Mark one adjustment screw graduation line with the steering gear housing.
- Loosen the adjusting screw 6.5 graduation lines to the left.
- Install the adjusting screw 1 graduation lines to the right.
• While rotating the adjusting screw, resistance must be felt.
- Attach a dial gauge with 0.001 graduations as depicted in the illustration.
• (VW 387)
• (3313)
- Adjust the dial gauge to 1 mm pretension.
- Remove the bellow on the steering pinion side from the steering gear housing.
- Rotate the steering rack with the (V.A.G 1332) set to 40 Nm and the (V.A.G 1923) on the tie rod. When (V.A.G 1332) disengages, set dial gauge to "0".
- Now remove (V.A.G 1332) from tie rod.
- Check the value displayed on the dial gauge.
If the value differs from the specified value, note the following:
The adjusting screw must always be rotated to the left first and then back to the right. This ensures the thread tooth flanks lie against each other without play.
Example
The measured play is too small.
- Loosen the adjusting screw 4 graduation lines to the left and then 1 graduation line back to the right.
The measured play is too large.
- Loosen the adjusting screw 2 graduation lines to the left and then 4 graduation line back to the right.
- Rotate the steering pinions on both side toward each other as far as the stop. Check the play by tightening the steering rack to 40 Nm.
• If specified values for steering rack play are not obtained, steering gear must be replaced completely!
- Rotate the steering one more time from stop to stop with a 14 mm open end wrench to check it.
• The steering should not lock when rotating it.
- Position the steering gear so it is in the straight position.
- Remove dial gauge and adapter, press rubber plug in adjustment screw.
- Install the boot on the steering gear housing with a new clamp.
- install steering gear. Refer to => [ Steering Gear ] Steering Gear.
After installing, perform a steering angle sensor (G85) basic setting with the (VAS 5051B).
- Perform basic setting.
- Perform vehicle alignment. Refer to => [ Wheel Alignment ] Wheel Alignment.
