High Mounted Brake Lamp

Removing

- Do not press brake pedal.

The upper rear lid trim only needs to be unclipped at the upper edge and bent away to remove the high mount brake lamp.

To prevent the upper rear lid trim from breaking, it must not be colder than 20 °C (68 °F). Warm the trim slightly with a hot air gun if necessary. This applies especially to older vehicles.

- Unclip the upper rear lid trim at the upper retaining clips and bend it away.

- Release the trim strip - 2 - to the right - arrow A - using a narrow screwdriver - 1 -.

The trim strip, the springs and the spring tabs will fall into the rear lid frame when released. Use a magnet to remove them if necessary.

- Press the high-mount brake lamp - 3 - out of the rear lid opening - arrow B - beginning at the left.

If the high mount brake lamp cannot be removed from the lid opening, release the spring tabs on the lamp from the outside.

- Disconnect the electrical connector - 4 -.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

If the high mount brake lamp Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are faulty, replace the entire lamp.

New high mount brake lamps are ready for installation and are delivered in the correct installation position.

If the same high mount brake lamp will be reused in the rear lid, for example after painting, it must be prepared for installation.

- Connect the electrical connector and insert the high mount brake lamp in the rear lid opening.

- Press the high mount brake lamp into the opening until it engages.

- Install the upper rear lid trim.

High Mounted Brake Lamp, Preparing for Installation

Because the high mount brake lamp separates into its individual pieces when removed, it must be prepared for installation.

Procedure

- Insert all spring tabs - 3 - into the lamp housing - 2 -.

The shorter side of the spring tab - arrow A - faces toward the bottom side of the high mount brake lamp.

The number of spring tabs differ depending on the date of manufacture.

- Engage the retaining rail - 1 - and slide it in as far as the stop in the - direction of arrow B -.
