Engine misfiring under heavy load, which is often diagnosed as being due to fouled spark plugs, could be caused by voltage "leakage" or "arcing" at the distributor cap, ignition coil high voltage lead, or one of the spark plug wires.

ALL OF THE SUBJECT VEHICLES, AS SHOWN ABOVE, SHOULD HAVE THE NEW IMPROVED SECONDARY IGNITION COMPONENTS, DESCRIBED ON PAGE 2, INSTALLED WHEN THEY ARE IN YOUR WORKSHOP. This program does not Include replacement or cleaning of spark plugs.

ASSEMBLY OF SECONDARY IGNITION COMPONENTS

Spark plug wires, the coil wire, distributor cap, or connectors arcing or damaged by arcing may be due to spark plug wires that were not properly assembled into their connectors by factory or dealer personnel.

When spark plug wires and/or the coil wire is replaced for any reason, the following procedures must be adhered to:

1. Unscrew the old high tension and/or coil wire approximately three turns and pull apart. If this step is not done, it will be almost Impossible to disassemble without the use of extreme force (which will damage the wire end) if the high tension wires were originally assembled correctly.

2. TO FACILITATE ASSEMBLY, ONLY THE FOLLOWING LUBRICANTS MAY BE USED CONTRARY TO PREVIOUS INFORMATION:

Universal Lubricating Spray - 81 22 9 407 005 High Temperature Paste - 81 22 9 407 171

3. Press the high tension wire into each connector until a "snap" is heard. THE SPARK PLUG WIRE AT THIS POINT IS NOT FULLY ASSEMBLED AND AN AIR GAP MAY REMAIN.

4. Screw the high tension wire into the connector approximately one turn until it resists further turning. DO NOT TRY TO FORCE THE HIGH TENSION WIRE TO TURN ANY FURTHER OR DAMAGE TO THE HIGH TENSION WIRE CRIMPED END WILL RESULT. The crimped end of the high tension wire will then be forced open resulting in a gap. This gap may cause a high tension wire, connector, or distributor cap to arc and subsequently fail.

5. Check all other high tension wires to make sure that they are properly screwed into their connectors. Should any high tension wires be discovered that continue to turn in the connector, i.e. the screw threads are stripped, repair as follows

a) Remove the high tension wire.

b) Slightly crimp the connector(s) at the end of the high tension wire and fully reassemble as shown on the previous page, 6. Spark plugs must be gapped within specifications.
