Fuel - Hesitation On Warm-Up/Rough Idle

GROUP 13
Fuel System

Bulletin Number
13 04 88 (1591)

Montvale, NJ
February 1988
Technical Dept.

SUBJECT:
BMW Gasoline Additive

MODELS:
All (except 524td)

Complaint:
Hesitation during warm-up and rough idle.

Cause:
Carbon deposits on intake valves.

Correction:
Regular use of new "BMW Gasoline Additive" (P/N 88 88 6 900 312) or its equivalent at every fuel tank fill up in areas where gasoline containing efficient deposit control additives are not available.

For more detailed information on fuel and detergency additives, refer to Service Information bulletin 13 01 88 (1564) and Technical Reference Information Bulletin 13 01 88 (2090).

Information:
Since not all gasoline contains the latest deposit control additives, BMW has developed a gasoline additive that can be added to each tankful of fuel, in order to assure proper engine cleanliness. This additive or its equivalent should be used whenever gasoline cannot be found which contains the proper detergency. From our research, it has been shown that additive must be present in every tankful to be effective. It has been determined that whenever additive is not present, carbon will be deposited on the intake valves. Therefore, using additives which specify "every fourth tankful" etc. are not recommended, since they are much less effective because they work only in the tankful to which they were added. In addition, no additives are known to BMW (at this time) to be effective at removing these deposits.

CAUTION:
The "BMW Gasoline Additive" or its equivalent should not be used when the fuel tank is filled with a high quality gasoline containing the latest deposit control additives. An overdosage of additives would occur, which can dilute the engine oil. Severe engine damage may be the consequence.

NOTE:
There are a number of engine and fuel additives on the market in addition to the BMW tested and approved Gasoline Additive. BMW of North America, inc. ("BMW NA") does not require that BMW dealers use only approved engine and/or fuel additives. If it is determined by BMW NA that an unapproved engine or fuel additive has caused damage to a BMW automobile, the BMW warranty will not cover this damage. The use of an unapproved engine and/or fuel additive will not, of itself, however, constitute a breach of the BMW Dealer Agreement.

AS THE FUEL QUALITY ISSUE CAN HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT ON CUSTOMER SATISFACTION, SALES AND SERVICE PERSONNEL ARE REQUESTED TO COMMUNICATE THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO THEIR CUSTOMERS AT EVERY POSSIBLE OCCASION.

Instructions for Use:
When your fuel level indicator reads less than 1/4 full, pour one bottle into the fuel tank (use two bottles for 7-Series) before filling up with gasoline. This will ensure good mixing.

BMW Gasoline Additive is designed to give optimum results when used in the ratio of one 8-ounce bottle to approximately 10 to 13 gallons of gasoline.

Quantity per fill-up:
1 bottle for all:
3-Series
5-Series (not 524td)
6-Series

2 bottles for all:
7-Series

Note:
Insert the bottle deep enough into the tank filler neck to open the tank flap. This will allow the additive to quickly drain into the tank.

Warranty Status:
Because carbon build-up is gasoline related, it cannot be considered a defect or shortcoming of the vehicle manufacturer. Consequently, usage of any recommended supplementary additives is at customer's expense.
