SUBJECT: Voluntary Exhaust Emissions Recall Campaign No. 86E-A01


MODELS: 325e, 528e, 533i, 633CSi, 733i (produced prior to April 1986)

BMW of North America will initiate an emission-related recall campaign to correct vehicles that may be in noncompliance with Federal and California Emission Standards.


The campaign consists of the exchange of the idle control unit. Customer notification of all affected vehicles will be conducted as soon as sufficient parts availability has been secured. In the interim, exchange idle control units on affected vehicles during regular service visits.

This Service Information Bulletin outlines the specifics for implementation of this campaign.

DESCRIPTION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION


Due to possible cracking of internal solder joints in the idle control unit, idle speed fluctuations might occur which influence the emissions.

All idle control units have been inspected and resoldered to assure proper operation. All units produced from the 46th week, 1985 or units with green tape at the base of the unit have been corrected.

CORRECTIVE PROCEDURE

1. Inspect existing idle control unit located in the glove box and determine if the unit has:

a) a green tape stripe; or

b) production date code 46 85 or later, (date code may also read 85 46).

If existing unit does not meet one of these conditions, it must be exchanged for a correct unit.

NOTE: Units with green tape are OK regardless of the date on the label.

2. In addition to checking for the idle control unit, the female pin sockets for the idle control unit should be checked for tightness.

Using a 2.5 mm (#40) drill bit, check for a snug fit of the female pin sockets. If any loose pin sockets are found, remove the back half of the connector block (keeping in mind the original locations of the pin sockets). Remove the female socket pins and slightly bend the tabs of the pin sockets as shown in the sketch below.



3. Reinstall pin sockets in original location as shown in the sketch below.

4. Snap the back half of the connector block back into position. Turn on ignition and test electrical power supply to transmission related pin sockets as listed below:


325e/A (shift lever in P or N - Automatic Transmission Only) Power on pin socket 2 and pin socket 7.


528e, 533i, 633CSi, 733i Power on pin socket 2 and pin socket 7.


528eA, 533iA, 633CSiA, 733iA (shift lever in P) Power on pin socket 2 and pin socket 8.


528eA, 533iA, 633CSiA, 733iA (shift lever in N) Power on pin socket 2 and pin socket 7.


If there is a mistake in power supply, check original location of the pin sockets again.


5. Reattach connector block to idle control unit.



6. To assure positive retention of connector block to idle control unit, secure the connector block to the control unit using a nylon tie strap.
Warranty

Status: Reimbursement for the required parts and labor required to perform this recall campaign will be provided through CAMPAIGN ENTRY processing.

This repair is reimburseable with no limitation on age or mileage of vehicle.
