90BMW21 Group 61 Electrical System
Bulletin Number 61 05 90 (3085)
Woodcliff Lake, NJ November 1990 Service Engineering
SUBJECT: Fuel Pump Relays

MODELS: E30, E32, E34

Situation: Complaints concerning relays supplied by SWF.

For example: 1) Battery dead due to sticking SWF relay; and

2) Unable to start vehicle due to SWF relay not closing.

Correction: In the event of failure of a SWF-supplied fuel pump relay:

1) If the failed relay is P/N 61 31 1 378 238 and is not used as a fuel pump or oxygen sensor heater relay, replace with P/N 61 31 1 378 297.

2) If the failed relay is a fuel pump relay (M20, M30, M42 engines in E30, E32, E34 models - P/N 61 31 1 378 238), or an oxygen sensor heater relay (M20, M42 engines in E30, E34 models - P/N 61 31 1 378 238), only replace with Siemens supplied relay (P/N 12 63 1 735 424).

Note: Since the oxygen sensor heater relay and the fuel pump relay are identical for some applications, Siemens relays are to be installed in both locations in case of complaint in order to prevent confusion.
