Summary: Several items influence the idle system and must be checked and/or adjusted before the idle system can be adjusted. Therefore it is very important to follow the sequence of the procedure described below. Details of these items are included in the next section of this Bulletin.
1. Check/Replace Window Lift Motors on 325e only.
2. Check Throttle Housing. Replace if necessary on 528e only.
3. Check/Adjust Throttle Butterfly Valve.
4. Check/Adjust Throttle Switch.
5. Check for/Install Purge Control Valve and Purge Line Restrictor.
6. Check/Replace Ignition Components.
7. Install Resistor/Temperature Switch on Affected Cars.
8. Adjust Valve Clearance.
9. Perform Engine Test with BMW Service Tester, Check Timing, Fuel Pressure (see Nominal Values Microfiche).
10. Clean the Injectors/Check A/C Freon Charge.
11. Check/Replace Idle Control Valve.
12. Check/Replace Idle Control Unit.
13. Adjust Engine RPM, CO and Idle Control Valve Current.
14. Perform Quality Control of Installed System and road test for driveability.
15. If Driveability Unsatisfactory Clean Carbon from Inlet Valves.
Detail
Procedure: 1. CHECK/REPLACE POWER WINDOW MOTORS ON 3S ERIES CARS ONLY. See S.I. 51 05 85 (1102).
2. CHECK THROTTLE HOUSING, REPLACE IF NECESSARY. On 528e cars produced prior to 1/84, check the throttle housing and/or the routing of the evaporative emissions hoses. See S.I. 13 01 84 (819) for detail. DO NOT adjust CO as described in this Bulletin since it will be done a little bit further. NOTE:
- 528e cars produced prior to 12/83 may require throttle housing replacement. Check if replacement has been performed.
- 528e cars produced 12/83 and 1/84 require re-routing of evaporative emission hoses. Check if performed.
- 325e cars are not affected and do not require throttle housing replacement nor evaporative hoses re-routing.
3. CHECK/ADJUST THROTTLE BUTTERFLY VALVE
- Disconnect throttle and kickdown cable.
- Remove bellows boot between throttle housing and air flow meter.
- Clean inside of Throttle housing before measuring.
- Insert a feeler gauge and measure gap between throttle plate and throttle housing opposite the crankcase ventilation tube (B). With throttle plate closed, pull out the feeler gauge. The .0015" (.038 mm) gauge should feel loose. The .002" (.051 mm) gauge should feel snug not loose.
- If throttle plate is out of specs. Remove plastic cap from throttle stop screw (A) and adjust same until above spec is reached.
- Reinstall plastic cap on throttle stop screw.
- Reinstall bellows boot between throttle housing and air flow meter.
4. CHECK THROTTLE BUTTERFLY SWITCH
- Refer to Repair Manual Job No. 13 63 544.
- Reconnect throttle and kickdown cable.
5. CHECK FOR/INSTALL PURGE CONTROL VALVE
- Check for the presence of a purge control valve P/N 11 63 1 707 770 in the line from the throttle housing to the Charcoal Cannister. If no valve is present, install one. Refer to S.I. 13 12 85 (1082) for additional details.
CHECK FOR/INSTALL PURGE LINE RESTRICTOR
- Check for the presence of a purge line restrictor P/N 89 88 2 000 000 in the line from the throttle housing to the Charcoal Cannister. This restrictor should be installed at the Charcoal Cannister end. Refer to S.I. 13 11 85 (1073) for details.
6. CHECK/REPLACE IGNITION COMPONENTS
- Remove all plugs and inspect for plug type and gap. Gap should be .028
- .032 (0.7 - 0.8 mm). Plug should be Bosch WR9LS.
- Inspect Coil Cap Cover P/N 12 12 1 284 464 to assure that part was produced after February 1985. Refer to S.I. 12 02 85 (1071) for details.
- Inspect individual spark plug wires and coil wire for signs of arcing. Correct as necessary. On 528e cars only, ensure that ignition wires, distributor cap and cover, and ignition coil have been updated as per S.I. 12 03 86 (1206). 325 cars have been updated in production.
7.a) CHECK FOR/INSTALL 35~C THERMOTIME SWITCH (1982 528e ONLY) Inspect existing thermotime switch, if a 17 PC thermotime switch is found, replace it with a 35~C switch. Specific details are covered in S.I. 13 03 83 (727).
b) INSTALL 680 OHM RESISTOR/TEMPERATURE SWITCH ON VEHICLES WITH 007 AND 021 MOTRONIC CONTROL UNITS
- Check Motronic Control Unit for Bosch Part No. A Unit with last three digits of . . . 007 (on 528e) and . . . 021 (on 325e) require addition of resistor/switch kit P/N 12 62 9 058 579. Refer to S.I. 13 05 86 (1160) for details.
- Do not install this fix on cars with Motronic Control Unit Bosch No. . . .027.
8. ADJUST VALVE CLEARANCE
- Adjust valve clearance to 0.25 mm (Engine Cold - i.e. maximum coolant temp. 95~F/35 0C) or 0.30 mm Engine Warm.
- Bleed cooling system with heater temperature control at full warm position.
9. PERFORM ENGINE TEST WITH BMW SERVICE TESTER.
- Hook up car to BMW Service Tester and assure that correct Nominal Values microfiche is inserted.
- Perform engine test.
- Compare nominal value to microfiche and adjust if necessary. At Engine Test Step 10, Check Fuel Pressure only. DO NOT perform CO adjustment yet.
10. CLEAN FUEL INJECTORS See Service Information 13 08 86 (1176) CHECK FREON CHARGE See Service Information 13 04 85 (1036).
- Connect the Fuel Injector Cleaner as described in the above bulletin. Once you get to Step 10 of this S.I., do not run the engine at 3000 RPM as described. First run the engine at 2000 RPM and check the Freon of the A/C system as described in S.I. 13 04 85 (1036). Bleed if necessary. After you finish bleeding the A/C system continue the injector cleaning procedure as per Step 10 of S.I. 13 08 86 (1176): Increase the engine speed to 3000 RPM and keep it there until engine starts to stumble steadily indicating it has used all the cleaning fluid.
11. CHECK/REPLACE IDLE CONTROL VALVE
- Inspect existing idle control valve. Exchange the valve if it is a black plastic valve. If the valve is a metal valve with an external "Basic" adjustment screw, determine if the valve has a) a yellow stripe around the external adjustment housing or "ink stamped" production date of 20.86 (or later). If the existing metal valve does not meet one of these conditions it must be exchanged for a correct valve.

On cars produced prior to 4/85, the following additional parts are required to replace a plastic Idle Control Valve with a metallic one. Order them separately.

- Installation Procedure
a. Disconnect electrical connection and bypass air hoses to idle control valve. Remove old idle control valve. 2.7 liter cars produced prior to 4/85 were equipped with plastic Idle Control Valves. When replacing a plastic valve, you need to install a new mounting bracket. You do not need to perform steps b and c when replacing a metal valve by another metal one.
b. Remove right (forward) screw of speed sensor bracket (this is the existing bracket mounted on the valve cover). Install bracket (P/N 13 41 9 058 756) over top of existing bracket and reinstall screw and tighten as shown in the drawing below:
c. Place idle control valve in position and attach bypass air hoses. Slip rubber mount (P/N 13 41 9 058 754) around valve and secure in bracket.
d. Secure fuel hose (from cold start valve) to idle control valve with nylon tie strap to prevent chaffing of the feed hose as shown below. Nylon tie strap MUST be installed BETWEEN the support bracket and the fuel hose.
e. Check both female pin sockets in valve plug for tightness. Check sockets individually on male end of idle control valve by turning female plug 90~. If a loose socket is found, replace it. Finally, reconnect electrical connection.
f. Check all screws/bolts for tightness.
12. REPLACE IDLE CONTROL UNIT See S.I. 13 04 86 (1159) for more details. Perform Emissions Recall 86E-A01
- Inspect existing idle control unit located in the glove box and determine if the unit has:
a. A green tape stripe; or
b. Production date code 46 85 or later (Date code may also be 85 46). If existing unit does not meet one of these conditions, it must be exchanged for a correct unit.
NOTE: Units with green tape are OK regardless of the date on the label.
- In addition to checking for the idle control unit, the female pin sockets for the idle control unit should be checked for tightness. Using a 2.5mm drill bit, check for a snug fit of the female socket pins. To assure positive retention of the harness connector block to the idle control unit, secure the connector block to the unit using a nylon tie strap.
13. ADJUST ENGINE RPM, CO AND IDLE CONTROL VALVE CURRENT
- Do not use the Ammeter of the BMW Service Test.
- Connect the Digital multimeter (BMW Special Tool P/N 88 88 6 900 308) "in series" with Idle Control valve and connect exhaust probes to exhaust manifold and BMW Service Test. Set the digital ammeter on 0-2000 mA DC scale.
- Start engine (oil temperature should be a minimum of 140~F/60~C).
- Switch air conditioning and all other electrical consumers off.
- Check current of the Idle Control Valve with Fluke ammeter function at the specified rpm as shown on BMW Service Tester. The current should be:
480 +/- 5 mA. at 700 +/- 50 rpm
- If the mA. and rpm readings are different from above, adjust Idle Control Valve as follows:
1. Turn the adjustment screw on the side of the Idle Control Valve clockwise (completely closed).
2. Slowly open the adjustment screw by turning counterclockwise until 480 mA. and the nominal rpm is reached.
NOTE: Do not turn screw too fast as you can easily overshoot the proper adjustment point.
- Run Engine Test step 10 and assure CO adjustment is within specifications. If necessary, adjust CO and then readjust milliamps and rpm to be within the above mentioned specifications.
- Disconnect BMW Service Test.
14. PERFORM QUALITY CONTROL OF INSTALLED SYSTEM AND ROADTEST FOR DRIVEABILITY If after performing all operations described above as part of the Engine Campaign the driveability of the car is still not satisfactory, only then perform step 15.
15. IF REQUIRED REMOVE CARBON FROM INLET VALVES (see S.I. 11 10 85 (1011). Then readjust milliamps and CO (see Step 13 for details).
