Steering: Testing and Inspection
Engine at operating temperature.
1. Checking Power Pump:
- Detach pressure line (2) on steering gear and connect on tester 32 4 000.
- Connect pressure line (1) of tester 32 4 000 on steering gear.
Installation:
Tightening torque M14 35 Nm, M16 40 Nm
Bleed power steering.
Test:
- Valve (A) must always be closed for high pressure testing (if not. pressure tester would be damaged!).
- Open valve (B) and bleed power steering.
- With engine running shut Valve (B) for max. 10 seconds and read pressure.
- The rated pump pressure must be reached within +/- 10%.
- If this pressure in not reached, check drive belt tightness.
- Repeat test:
If pressure is still not reached, replace power steering pump.
If rated pressure is exceeded. replace power steering pump.
2. Checking Power Steering:
- Run engine.
- Pull steering wheel against final left lock with a force 100 N (22 lbs.) about 5 seconds; use a force meter.
- Read pressure from tester 32 4 000.
- Repeat same test on right leak.
- If pressure values are less then the previously measured pump pressure. replace steering gear.
