Engine: Service and Repair


Prior to disconnecting fuel lines, disconnect master relay and carefully depressurize fuel system.




Mark installation position of all components, electrical connectors and hoses prior to removal.
1. Disconnect positive and negative cables from battery, positive harness lead from battery cable terminal and ground strap from body.
2. Lift off headlamp covers and disconnect electrical connector for hood lamp.
3. Disconnect windshield and headlamp washer hoses.
4. Mark installation position of bolts securing hinges to hood and remove 2 bolts from each hinge.
5. Remove retainers and disconnect hood supports.
6. Support hood, then remove remaining hinge bolts and the hood.
7. Remove expansion tank cap, open radiator drain, raise and support vehicle and remove block drain plug.
8. Disconnect exhaust system and remove transmission, then lower vehicle.
9. Secure fan pulley, then remove fan retaining nut and the fan and clutch assembly. Retaining nut has left hand threads.
10. Disconnect lower radiator hose and electrical connectors to radiator temperature switches.
11. Remove fan shroud retaining screws and disconnect radiator inlet hoses.
12. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect and plug cooler lines.
13. On all models, remove left and right radiator mounting nuts, radiator and fan shroud.
14. Remove power steering pump retaining bolts and secure pump aside, leaving hoses connected.
15. Remove bolts securing A/C compressor to bracket, disconnect belt and secure compressor aside, leaving hoses connected.
16. Disconnect electrical connectors from air flow sensor, release harness from clips and pull out drain hose, loosen clamp securing duct to throttle body, then remove air flow sensor/air cleaner assembly.
17. Disconnect electrical connectors from idle and fuel injection control units, then pull harness into engine compartment.
18. Disconnect ground strap from firewall and electrical connector from oxygen sensor.
19. Release straps securing engine harness to firewall and secure harness to engine.
20. Disconnect primary and secondary leads from ignition coil, distributor leads from main harness and electrical connector from solenoid near coil, then secure harness to engine.
21. Remove lower relays from relay board and disconnect engine harness from connector under relay board.
22. Disconnect accelerator, cruise control and transmission control cables as equipped, and secure cables aside.
23. Disconnect expansion tank and heater hoses, and the fuel hoses, then plug hoses and remove support brackets as needed.
24. Disconnect all vacuum hoses from components chassis mounted components.
25. Remove upper radiator hose and connect suitable lifting equipment to engine.
26. Remove nuts securing left and right engine mounts, then lift engine from engine compartment.
27. Reverse procedure to install.
