Engine - Oil Filter Element Leak

This Service Information Bulletin supersedes S.I. 11 01 85 (965) which should be removed from your S.I. binder and discarded.


This S.I. deletes the oil pump cover part number which is not applicable to the M30 engines of the E3, E9 and E12 Series.

SUBJECT: Engine oil leaks

ENGINES: M 10 and M 30

Complaint: Oil leaks at oil filter housing

Cause: Oil may leak out of the oil filter element due to very high pressures in the lubricating system while starting at low outside temperatures and accelerating the engine after it has started.

Remedy: Provided that

^ engine oil viscosity corresponds to seasonal temperature range;
^ oil filter, sealing ring and flange are undamaged;
^ oil filter is properly installed and tightening torque is correct



then the oil pump cover of the existing engine oil pump must be replaced with a cover having an eight (8) bar relief valve (see chart).

Note: The modified pump cover was introduced in production as of 10/83.
Warranty
Status: Reimburseable under the applicable BMW Limited Warranty only.

Flat Rate Operation: 11 41 000 plus 4 FRU WT for inspecting the oil pump and installing a new cover. (Refer to the applicable Repair Manual section regarding overhauling the oil pump.)
