Situation: Effective immediately, only the grooved Viton(R) valve stem seals are to be used when repairing/rebuilding cylinder heads and engines.

These seals exhibit greatly improved resistance to the hardening and cracking caused by high alcohol content in the fuel and have been used in production since August 21, 1984.

Identification The part number, engine application and identifying feature of the Viton(R) valve stem seals are as follows:
Parts
Information: Stocks of all other valve stem seals (applicable to the M10, M20, M30 engines) are to be removed from inventory per instructions from the Parts Department (refer to Dealer Parts Bulletin V11-4 dated 8/85).

The new version seals are available immediately and may be ordered from your Parts Distribution Center.

NOTE: It is possible that old version valve stem seals will occasionally appear in a head gasket set. These sets will bear a red label (applied by the Parts Dept.) to indicate that the valve seals should be checked and, if necessary, replaced by new version seals.

To facilitate this, the cost of the head gasket set has been lowered by an amount equal to the cost of the additional valve seals. Also the head gasket set P/N will "explode" to include the extra valve seals needed. This will continue until only new version valve seals are supplied in the head gasket sets.

Service Technician
Information: Before beginning a rebuild, always check for the grooved Viton(R) valve stem seals in the gasket set.
