Campaign - Engine/Fuel System Concern: Overview

86BMW03

GROUP 05 Technical
Bulletin Number 05 01 86 (1163) Page 1 of 3
Montvale, NJ May 1986 Technical Dept.
SUBJECT: '86 Gasoline Engine Campaign

MODELS: All U.S. Specification Vehicles - 1982-1986 Model Year: Equipped with L-Jetronic or Motronic Injection Systems

Situation: Fuel quality in the United States has been the subject of much publicity lately. Several major Oil Companies have been advertising new additives in their fuel to counter the negative effect of fuel deposits on gasoline engines.

With customer satisfaction as a main objective, BMW is introducing an Engine Campaign to insure that each and every BMW is equipped with the most technologically updated components in order to cope with the quality of gasoline. This campaign involves the following models:

318i 1984-1985 Model Year
325 1984-1986 Model Year
533i, 633CSi, 733i 1982-1984 Model Year
535i, 635CSi, 735i and L7 1985-1986 Model Year

Campaign
Elements: The first element of this Engine Campaign is a basic engine performance check. Any components and settings bound to have a direct influence on the engine idle system will be checked and adjusted if necessary, and a full BMW engine test will be run on the BMW Tester. Bringing the car to a basic state of correct adjustment is a pre-requisite for the updates to follow.

The second element of the Campaign is to update the idle control units and the idle control valves. The ICU's have upgraded electronics and their manufacturing process is improved. On the 1.8 liter and the 2.7 liter engines the idle control valve is now of the metallic adjustable type. The external adjustment allows compensation for the effects of carbon accumulation and engine wear. Other updates specific to each model are described in the bulletins.

The third element of the Campaign is the cleaning of the fuel injectors. A new cleaner will be shipped to all dealers under the automatic tool shipment plan, and will enable you to clean the injectors without removing them from the engine.
The fourth element of the Campaign and the most important one is to properly communicate to customers the effect of gasoline quality on their engines. Service Advisors should use literature provided by BMW to this effect to illustrate the subject to customers. Techron usage should be explained and the use of it encouraged.

S.I. Bulletins specific to each model describe the repairs covered free of charge.

A listing by model of all the updates covered by the Engine Campaign is enclosed. Service Advisors should use this listing to promote the campaign with customers.

Separate S.I. bulletins - one for each model BMW affected - give you a specific procedure to follow to perform this Engine Campaign. During the testing of these repair procedures it was found that several engine components and adjustments influence the idle system directly. It is therefore very important to follow the sequence of the procedure described in each bulletin and eliminate all potential problems from other engine systems that can negatively affect the idle system.

BMW NA will pay only for the repairs specifically listed in the Engine Campaign bulletins. While performing these checks and repairs, should you find other conditions that need to be corrected and that influence the behavior of the Engine (which are not covered by the regular BMW Limited Warranties) inform the customer of the cost of these extra repairs and get his authorization to perform them before proceeding further.

The labor allowances for the Campaign procedures were developed by application of a productive approach to the complete "work flow". An important contribution to this productivity is the principle that the technician would be able to obtain all of the required parts during one visit to the Parts Department.

The Flat Rate times calculation was also based on the sequence of the repair procedures, In calculating these times, one operation was used as a "Main Work" operation and others as "Associated Work" operations.

The main work operation takes into consideration the time it takes the technician to get the car into the workstall and discuss the repair with the Service Advisor.

When the technician is asked to take the car for a road test to check for driveability, then back into his workstall for carbon removal if necessary, the Flat Rate time for the carbon removal is calculated again as a "Main Work" operation.

Also, determine from the vehicle history file if the A/C campaign [S.I. 64 02 85 (1005)] has been accomplished. If not, take the opportunity to perform the A/C campaign at the same time.

Parts
Information: The campaign will be in effect for at least one year. Therefore, do not order your entire parts requirements at one time. Discuss your anticipated schedule of repairs with your Parts Manager-and coordinate his ordering/stocking within the capacity of the Service Department.

Cool Several items influence the idle system and must be checked adjusted before the idle system can be adjusted. It is therefore very important to follow the exact sequence of the procedures described in the "Campaign Procedures" bulletins.

Model Year Identification:
The "model year" of BMW vehicles (U.S. specification) produced since the beginning of the 1982 Model Year, can be determined from the 17 Digit Chassis Number.

The 10th position indicates the model year of the vehicle.
