Ignition Switch: Service and Repair


Removal

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove steering wheel.
2. Remove left lower instrument panel trim and the lower steering column cover.
3. Remove retaining screws and disconnect headlamp and windshield wiper switches from column.
4. Pull flasher relay out of holder.
5. Remove 4 shear screws securing steering column bracket using suitable chisel.

6. Remove shear screw (1) and setscrew (3), Fig. 4, securing steering lock housing.
7. Hold down on steering column and withdraw steering lock assembly
8. Disconnect ignition switch electrical connector.

9. Depress retainer and remove switch and/or lock, as needed, Fig. 5.

Installation

1. Ensure that lock and switch tabs are aligned, then install switch into lock housing.
2. Connect switch electrical connector, hold down on column and install lock assembly.
3. Install setscrew and lock with paint, then install new lock housing shear screw, tightening screw until head breaks off.
4. Install 4 new shear screws securing steering column bracket and tighten screws until heads break off.
5. Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation.
