TOOL TIP

SUBJECT: Radial Oil Seal Removal

Situation: In places where the applicable repair manual does not state a special tool for oil seal removal (such as Getrag 260 and 265 selector shaft radial oil seal), a screwdriver can be modified to ease removal.

Solution: Grind the tip of a flat blade screwdriver to approximately 1.5 mm thickness. Next, grind a notch (a die grinder works best for this) in the side of the blade as shown below. Note: Be certain to file off any burrs or sharp edges so as not to damage the sealing surface.
Suggested by Brian Ardrey of Chris Motors, Decatur, Georgia.

Special Note: There was a typographical error on Tool Tips Bulletin Number 04 25 89 (1969). The Technician's name was spelled incorrectly. It should have read John Sharkey. Sorry for the error, John.
