SUBJECT: Service Indicator

MODEL: 524td/A

Status: Service Indicator for BMW 524td/A uses a modified logic circuit for specific maintenance requirements.

Reason: Oil service intervals reduced (as compared with gasoline-engined cars) due to increased oil loading resulting from the following:

^ High carbon (soot) constituent, which results in engine oil thickening, i.e. a change of viscosity.

^ High pressure and temperature load of the engine oil. (With Diesel engines, oil contributes to cooling to a higher degree than with gasoline engines, e.g. piston and spray nozzle cooling ducts as well as turbocharger cooling.)

^ The higher sulphur content in Diesel fuels results in an earlier acidification of the oil and thus corrosion of the engine. The increased oxygen constituent contributes to increased catalytic oxidation.

General
Information: Load factor The load factors "distance" and "engine temperature" remain unchanged. The speed factor has been set to 3,800 RPM (revolutions per minute).

Resetting Service
Indicator Pre-delivery Check
^ Prior to delivery, the service indicator must be reset to zero with the "inspection button" to reset the load memory (i.e. activate Service Indicator).

^ Do not reset the Service Indicator after the Running-in Inspection at 1200 miles.

Oil Service
^ There are always two oil services between the load-dependent inspections instead of one as with a gasoline engine. This is shown by all five green LED's going out and the OIL SERVICE inscription coming on. When the "oil service button" is reset the Oil Service inscription is cancelled and all five green LED's are activated.

Load Dependent Inspection

^ All five green LED's have gone out, the INSPECTION display comes on when the "inspection button" is reset the INSPECTION display goes out and all give green LED's come on.
