SUBJECT: Update of Gasoline Engine Campaign

In May, 1986 BMW introduced the '86 Gasoline Engine Campaign as described in S.I. 05 01 86 (1183). This Campaign allowed BMW dealers to perform specific repairs to selected BMW cars under warranty.

Due to the very favorable reactions from dealers and customers, this Engine Campaign is now extended until December 31, 1987 with the following change:

Effective April 15, 1987, the inspection and/or replacement of rear window motors described in S.I. 51 05 85 (1102) is no longer covered by the Campaign. These motors are covered by the regular BMW Limited Warranty. Therefore, please do not replace them unless they fail.

Warranty note: The Engine Campaign only covers cars from Model Year 1982 to 1986 inclusive. Later models and improved components are not covered by the campaign.

The Engine Campaign includes the inspection and automatic replacement of front window motors within a certain production range. We are receiving many window motors replaced under the Campaign, outside this range. Front window motors outside the production range described in S.I. 51 05 85 (1102) that are not defective and that are returned with the description "Engine Campaign" on the Warranty Parts Return Tag will be returned to you and debited to your Warranty Account.

Cleaning of carbon deposits from the intake valves

Effective May 1, 1987 carbon cleaning is no longer authorized under warranty unless it is done in conjunction with the Engine Campaign. Carbon cleaning under the Campaign is authorized until December 31, 1987 and will be discontinued thereafter. Under the Engine Campaign, a car is eligible for a carbon cleaning under warranty once only. Should this car have had a carbon cleaning prior to the performance of the Engine Campaign, you can still clean the valves under warranty at the same time as you perform the Campaign, providing that the car has traveled at least 5000 miles since the last carbon cleaning.

BMW committed considerable resources to test and recommend an approved gasoline additive that helps in preventing the accumulation of carbon deposits.
It is extremely important that you communicate to your customers the need to use this gasoline additive regularly. BMW now communicates the same message to customers by stating in the Owner's Handbooks of 1987 and later model cars (see attachment) that a gasoline additive is needed.

Please be aware that this gasoline additive was especially formulated to be used in the ratio of one bottle to approximately 10 to 13 gallons of gasoline. Using the BMW Gasoline Additive at a higher concentration than recommended has no benefit in preventing carbon build-up and may, in fact, be detrimental to the longevity of the engine.

In the Service Maintenance Booklet carbon cleaning from the intake valves has been included under the Unscheduled Maintenance Section. This cleaning procedure is also listed on the Maintenance Sheets for use in dealer workshops.

A counter display poster as well as a pamphlet on Engine Performance is available for your Service Reception area. It enables your Service Advisor to explain to the customer the effects of the BMW Gasoline Additive on the performance of his car.

Finally, the suggested retail price of the BMW Gasoline Additive has been reduced.
