PDI - Chromed Exhaust Pipe Tip Burns Customer's Leg

Woodcliff Lake, NJ December 1988 Technical Dept.
SUBJECT: Chromed Exhaust Pipe Tip

MODELS: All so equipped

Situation: It has come to our attention that, in isolated cases, it is possible for a customer's leg to come into contact with the hot exhaust pipe tip under the following conditions:

- Customer unloading the trunk from a position close relatively to the exhaust pipe.

- Customer stretching one leg underneath the rear bumper (in direction of the rear axle) exactly at the position of the chromed exhaust pipe tip.

Under these conditions, the customer's leg might come into contact with the exhaust pipe, even if there is a considerable gap between the rear end of the tip and the rear end of the bumper.

Correction: To minimize this possibility, install chromed exhaust pipe tips in such a way that the rear end of the tip overlaps the rear end of the exhaust pipe not more than 5 to 8 mm (maximum 1/4 inch), see sketch.
This installation procedure is part of the PDI for applicable models and also valid for every chromed exhaust pipe tip installed later.

Note: All chromed exhaust pipe tips stocked by our Parts Distribution Center include a multi-language instruction sheet for their installation.

Take every opportunity, when a car with chromed exhaust pipe tip is in your workshop, to check for the proper gap and to correct, if necessary, by using a rubber hammer.
