Removing and Installing Transmission
Removing and Installing Transmission- Disconnect battery ground lead.
- Unscrew nut (1).
- Disconnect throttle cable.
Installation:
- Adjust throttle cable. Adjustments
BMW 318:
BMW 325e, 325i:
BMW 318i with Distributor:
- Remove protective cover (2) and distributor cap (3) to avoid damaging the distributor cap.
Remove exhaust assembly.
BMW 325 iX:
- Remove transfer box.
- Unscrew connector (2).
Installation:
- Also mount holder (4).
- Remove heat shield (3),
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
- Drain oil.
IMPORTANT!
Never reuse drained oil.
Installation:
- If oil smells burnt and is black, the transmission will have to be disassembled.
IMPORTANT!
- If transmission was faulty, clean oil cooler and lines with compressed air and flush twice with ATF.
- Remove oil filler tube (1).
- Unscrew oil cooler lines on transmission and insert plugs.
Version without Screwed Adapter:
IMPORTANT! - Installation:
- Check O-rings (1) - replacing 0-rings, if necessary.
- Remove reinforcement plate.
- Unscrew Torx bolts with a Torx socket.
IMPORTANT! - Installation:
- Washers must be used with Torx bolts to avoid increasing the breaking-loose torque.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
- Lift out grill.
BMW 325 IX:
- Unscrew propeller shaft at front end.
- Unscrew reinforcement plate on engine and transmission and loosen 2 screws of oil level switch enough until the reinforcement plate can be removed after bending holder (1).
IMPORTANT!
- Use spacer (2) between the bolt and case to prevent scraping of the Torx bolt on the front propeller shaft section.
- Unscrew torque converter on drive plate at three points.
- Turn flywheel for this step.
IMPORTANT! - Installation:
- Tightening torque*
Only use size M 10 x 16 mm bolts together with spring washers. Non-conformance will lead to destruction of the transmission.
Only Version with DME:
- Unscrew bolts.
- Pull out speed sensor (1) and reference mark sensor (2).
IMPORTANT! - Installation:
- Check Installed position.
- Plugs must not be mixed up.
- Install speed sensor (1) In bore (D) and reference mark sensor (2) with ring (3) in bore (B).
- Engine can not be started if plugs are mixed up.
Installation:
- Check O-rings.
- Install sensors with Molykote Longterm 2.
IMPORTANT!
- Keep grease and dirt oft of face of DME sensors.
Only for Cars with EH Transmission:
- Turn bayonet fastener (1) to the left.
- Pull off plug (2).
- Lift wire harness out of holders.
Installation:
- Connect plug (2) In such a manner that marking lines are aligned.
- Support transmission with Special Tools 240 120 and 00 2020.
- Remove cross member.
Installation:
Center transmission.
- Tightening torque*
- Unscrew joint disc on transmission.
- Disconnect shift rod (1).
Installation:
Adjust shift. Adjustments
Installation:
- Replace stop nuts.
- Tighten nuts with a standard 17 mm socket and torque wrench.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
IMPORTANT!
- Only tighten nuts (never bolts) to avoid stress in the joint disc.
Version with Universal Joint:
- Unscrew propeller shaft on transmission.
Installation:
- Tighten nuts with correct torque*.
- Loosen threaded ring (1) several turns,
Installation:
- Tighten threaded ring (1) with Special Tool 26 1 040 after finishing installation.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
- Unscrew Center mount.
Installation:
- Preload center mount forward by distance A 4 to 6 mm (0.157 to 0.236").
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
- Bend propeller shaft down and pull off of centering pin.
IMPORTANT!
- Don't let propeller shaft fall into the joints.
- Suspend propeller shaft from car on pieces of wire.
- Lower transmission.
- Unscrew transmission on engine.
- Unscrew Torx bolts with a Torx socket.
IMPORTANT! - Installation:
Washers must be used with Torx bolts to avoid increasing the breaking.loose torque.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
- Lift out grill.
- Pull transmission off of engine, pressing off torque converter at same time.
Caution!
Special tool hoist with mounted transmission may only be moved in completely lowered position.
IMPORTANT! - Installation:
- Check installed position of torque converter.
- Drive dogs must be located below edge of case.
Installation:
- Check drive plate for breaks and cracks, replacing if necessary.
Engine M 10:
- Hold flywheel with Special Tool 11 2 160.
- Unscrew expension bolts.
IMPORTANT!
- Replace expension bolts and install new bolts with a bolt cement.
- Only coat threads.
- Clean tapped bores thoroughly.

Engine M 20:
- Hold flywheel with Special Tool 11 2 170.
