The BMW On-Board Computer IIPanel Layout
The Digital Display Window is at the top of the panel. It features a Liquid Crystal Display rather than a series of Light-Emitting Diodes, and continuously displays whatever function has been called up until another function is requested. It will not automatically return to the time-of-day display as does the On-Board Computer I.
However, each time the ignition is turned on. the display will be the clock function. regardless of whatever may have been called up before the ignition was turned off.
In addition to the LCD Display instead of LED's, the On-Board Computer II offers three languages instead of the former two. All functions can be displayed in either German, American, or British.
In German, times are given in the twenty-four hour format, distances are in kilometers, fuel consumption and range calculations are based on liters, and temperature readings are given in degrees Celsius.
In the American and British modes, times are in AM and PM, distances are in miles, fuel consumption and range calculations are based on gallons, and temperatures are in degrees Fahrenheit. There is, however, one major difference.
In American, average-miles-per-gallon and range displays are based on our domestic gallon; in the British mode, those calculations are based on the Imperial Gallon, which is 25% larger. For the sake of simplicity, all programming and readout figures and instructions in this brochure will be given in the American system of measurement.
Below the display is the keyboard. with thirteen buttons and a Changeover Contact. There is no Miles/Kilometers switch.
Nine of the buttons are used to call up a specific computer function, while the four numbered buttons are for programmable inputs. All thirteen buttons will be covered separately.
