SUBJECT: Corrosion on Terminals of ABS Control Unit and Wiring Harness Connector
MODEL: All 6 Series (E24) equipped with ABS
General
Information: It has been noted that on some 6 Series vehicles moisture may penetrate the seal on the wiring harness connector for the ABS control unit. This might result in the corroding of the terminals on the control unit and the connector.
The following procedures are designed to prevent any corrosion.
All 6 Series vehicles equipped with ABS (as they come in for routine service) should be checked according to these instructions, new parts fitted as needed and the splash shield from the kd installed.
Materials
needed: A - BMW Repair kit (BMW P/N 88 88 2 000 006) contains:
^ Connector Seal
^ 1 Terminal lock
^ Neoprene splash shield
B - Dielectric grease (BMW P/N 88 88 2 000 005 - order separately) C - Isopropyl alcohol (available locally)
REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS
The following procedures are for a vehicle without corrosion damage. On any vehicle with distinct corrosion damage, perform a complete ABS test with the BMW Service Tester. Replace the ABS control unit only if it fails the ABS test.
All ABS control units replaced under warranty must have the printout of the complete ABS test attached.
ABS control units received without the printout will not be accepted and will be returned to the dealer.
Illustration 1:
1) Remove plastic cover from ABS control unit.
2) Disconnect wiring harness connector from control unit.
3) See illustration # 1. Examine rubber seal in connector for evidence of an uneven seal (impression from ABS connector receptacle not uniform in depth or position).
Illustration 2:
4) See illustration # 2. Carefully remove the rubber seal and check if both terminal locks are in place (if a terminal lock is missing it will allow the rubber seal to deform and allow moisture to enter the connector assembly).
5) If terminal lock is missing disassemble harness connector and install terminal lock from kit.
6) Reassemble harness connector. Make certain rubber cover over wiring harness/connector junction is smooth and tight. Position new wire tie in the same location as factory assembled harness.
7) Replace old rubber seal with new seal from repair kit.
8) Cover terminals in connector with dielectric grease. Spread a small amount of dielectric grease around the inner edge of the connector receptacle in the ABS control und.
9) Reinstall harness connector to ABS control unit.
10) Reattach plastic cover over ABS control unit.
11) Remove the screws securing the blower motor covering.
12) Slide the cover towards the left side of the vehicle (driver's side) approximately 4".
Illustration 3:
13) See illustration # 3. Position the splash shield from the repair kit over the ABS control unit plastic cover so the hole in the splash shield lines up with the Tinnerman nut on the mounting tab for the blower motor cover. Make a note of the relative position of the splash shield on the plastic cover.
14) Remove the ABS control unit cover from the car.
15) Clean the top surface of the cover across the area where the splash shield will be attached. Note: Use a clean rag and isopropyl alcohol (available locally) to clean cover. Cover must be completely clean for optimum adhesion of splash shield adhesive strip.
16) Peel the protective strip from the adhesive surface of the splash shield and install splash shield onto cover.
17) Reinstall ABS control unit cover and splash shield assembly over control unit.
18) Reposition the blower motor cover so that the splash shield is sandwiched between the mounting tab and the cover.
19) Reinstall the blower motor cover screws.
