SUBJECT: EML Adaptation
MODEL: 750iL
Complaint: Rough idle, idle speed deviates from specifications.
Situation: If the battery has been disconnected for one hour or more, it may be necessary for the EML system to re-adapt to prevailing conditions. This can be accomplished with the following procedure.
1. Bring the engine to operating temperature.
2. While observing traffic regulations, drive vehicle in first gear range to an engine speed greater than 5,000 RPM.
3. Then, release accelerator pedal and allow engine to decelerate to idle rpm.
4. Perform "5,000 RPM - decelerate" sequence three times.
5. Finally, the engine should idle for 5 minutes in Neutral or Park.
Special Note:
This procedure may also be necessary when replacing the EML control unit and should be considered when performing the current EML control unit update (see S.I. 12 04 88 (1634).
