Preparatory Instructions

PREPARATORY INSTRUCTIONS FOR
RESEALING M70 TIMING CHAIN CASE

Prior to starting the resealing procedure, note the following important points:

^ All cosmetic surfaces must be protected with fender covers or the equivalent during the entire resealing procedure.

^ Review the following timing case resealing steps prior to actually performing the work.

^ Before removing the intake manifolds, thoroughly clean the intake port area with compressed air.

^ Cover intake ports with a wide tape strip immediately after removing the intake manifolds. Remove the tape strip just before reinstallation.

^ Watch and account for all fasteners and related hardware, e.g., a steel locating dowel could fall into the lower timing case when separating the upper case halves etc.

^ After removing the fan and shroud, cover the radiator fin area with a section of cardboard of appropriate size. This will protect the technician's hands from injury and the radiator from damage.

^ A small number of gasket kits were packed with regular 6 mm bolts instead of the self-sealing type (micro-encapsulated). These bolts can be used with a coating of blue Loctite(R) or, if time permits, the correct bolts can be ordered.

PREPARATORY DISASSEMBLY

1.) Remove left and right intake manifolds and seal intake ports.

2.) Remove left and right distributor housings.

CAUTION

When loosening the internal hex bolt for the distributor rotor adapter, care should be exercised to avoid stripping the hex. A 6 mm hex tool should be fully inserted into the bolt head and held straight to the bolt center line while applying turning force.

An improved tool which minimizes the possibility of stripping the 6 mm hex will be available soon. The special tool, P/N 88 88 6 002 180, will be sent to all dealers under the automatic tool shipment program.

3.) Remove cooling fan and fan shroud.

4.) Remove underside protective cover.
