SUBJECT: Automatic Transmission Pickup Screen
MODELS: All with deep oil pan (from 2/88 production)
Situation: The above models may produce "suction" noises when cold.
Cause: Cold ambient temperatures cause the ATF volume to contract to the minimum operating level. An air/oil mixture may be drawn into the oil strainer during initial cold weather operation.
Solution: Replace the existing ATF oil strainer and O-ring with the improved version.
Parts
Information: The improved ATF oil strainer has been phased into production as of September 1989 and can be identified by a rolled lip to retain the O-ring. The improved version strainer (and O-ring) can be ordered using the following part numbers:
DEEP OIL PAN
MODELS: E31, E32 and E34 from 2/88
Oil Strainer: P/N 24 31 1 218 571
O-Ring: P/N 24 31 1 218 570
FLAT OIL PAN
MODELS: E30 and ALL models before 2/88
Oil Strainer: P/N 24 31 1 218 550
O-Ring: P/N 24 31 1 218 570
NOTES: DO NOT use O-ring P/N 24 34 1 217 437 with the new design strainers.
When servicing transmissions with the early design strainers (identified by absence of rolled lip to retain O-ring) and the strainer is to be reused, use ONLY O-ring P/N 24 34 1 217 437.
