This Service Information Bulletin supersedes the (orange) Advance Dealer Information bulletin 13 03 90 (3039). It lists a part number change for the molded hose.
Please remove and discard Advance Dealer Information bulletin 13 03 90 (3039) dated April 1990 from your S.I. binder.
SUBJECT: Evaporative Purge Valve
MODELS: E30/E34 (with M20, 2.5L engine)
Complaint: Rough engine idle, Check Engine light comes on, possibly fault code
# 10 sets in DME fault memory.
Situation: When the hose clamp is installed improperly, the molded hose connecting the purge valve to the intake manifold can crack.
Solution: Whenever the above complaints are received, prior to any other component replacement always inspect the purge valve molded hose.
The crack in the molded hose may be located on the small end near the intake manifold contact point. Visual inspection is difficult and the removal of the inlet air boot and/or other components may be required to view the molded hose properly.
Workshop
Hint: The BMW DME fuel injection system is adaptive and the system will easily compensate for minor unmetered air leaks such as a crack in the purge valve molded hose.
Whenever such air leaks are corrected, the DME fuel injection system must be allowed to readapt to the new conditions. Readaptation is easily done by operating the engine at idle (LL) and 2,000 rpm (TL) for approximately 5 minutes. A short "in town" roadtest is the easiest way to check the repair and to allow the system to adapt to the correct air/fuel ratio.
