Recall - Possible Fuel Hose Leakage

GROUP 13
Fuel System

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 13 02 93 (3735) dated April 1994, which should be removed from you S.I. binder and discarded.

SUBJECT:
Feed Fuel Hose Recall Campaign No. 94V-066

MODELS:
E30 with M20, M42 Engines

Situation:
The potential condition involves feed fuel hoses that could, in some cases, harden and "set" overtime due to engine compartment temperatures. If this "setting" occurs, it is possible that seepage between the hose and fitting could result because the clamp cannot provide sufficient sealing force to compensate for the hardening of the hose.

This "setting/hardening" effect of the hose tends to occur when there is no fuel flow and in conjunction with high engine compartment temperatures - i.e., with engine off after running (e.g overnight). Because fuel flow causes the hose to soften and expand, thereby sealing the hose/fitting connection, the seepage tends to occur only at and immediately after engine start-up.

Vehicles Affected:
This Recall Campaign involves E30 vehicles with M20 and M42 engines which were produced from 1/89-12/92 (M20) and 2/90-12/92 (M42).

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communications System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" "Vehicle History" and enter the Chassis Number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the installation or take no further action.

Note:
If a customer presents the customer notification letter (for that chassis number) it is not necessary to inquire on DCS. Perform the required repair, unless the fuel teed hose update as described in an earlier version of this bulletin had been performed and a label with code number 90 stamped out is found on the B-pillar of that vehicle.

The Chassis Numbers below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges, but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Recall Campaign. The final decision factor is the DCS inquiry.

Correction:

In order to update the affected E30 vehicles, all feed fuel hoses (1) located in the engine compartment and fuel hose clamps (2) must be replaced with the new style components included in the parts kit (see illustrations).

Warning:
Care must be used when repairs are performed in the area of the starter motor electrical connections to avoid unwanted starter motor engagement and/or a short circuit to ground.

Note:
In order to replace the upper feed fuel hose on the M42 engine it is necessary in most cases to first remove the heated throttle body (see procedure attached to S.I. 13 06 91 (3440)). Depending upon the installed position of the fuel hose clamps, it is possible on some vehicles to replace the upper feed fuel hose without removing the intake manifold. However, on other vehicles it will be necessary to remove the intake manifold due to the installed position of the hose clamps; in this case, an additional intake manifold gasket is needed, part number 11 61 1 717 761.

The new fuel hose included in the parts kit can be identified by the blue writing on the black rubber background and should only be installed in conjunction with the new style clamps.

The new style fuel hose clamp can be identified by the plastic shear-off hex nut head (5 mm hex) and drive sleeve (see illustration - items 1 and 2) and, with the drive sleeve removed, by the slanted screw driver slot (item 3) used only for loosening the clamp.

When the clamp is installed it should be tightened until the 5 mm shear-off hex shears off, thus assuring the proper torque. When removing the new style clamp it may be necessary to remove the plastic drive sleeve (item 2) with a pair of pliers first.

Important Notes:
- The new style hose clamp is a "one time" clamp, i.e. whenever removal becomes necessary it cannot be reused and must be replaced.

- Whenever a fuel hose is removed from a fuel line/component in the engine compartment the hose and clamps must be replaced with the optimized fuel hose and new style clamps.

Recall Campaign Label Instructions:
This Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 90. After the vehicle has been checked and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-008) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 90 printed on the label (2); and,

c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the "B" pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from a underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Information:
Reimbursement for this Recall Campaign will be provided through Campaign Entry.

Special Defect Code: 00 13 01 26 01

Note:
Due to system limitations, Work Package # 6 must also be used for the 325iX. Both part number 13 31 1 748 686 and the new part number 13 31 1 740 736 for the 325iX are the same price.

Note:
If replacement of throttle body gaskets (P/N 13 54 1 247 400) and/or intake manifold gasket (P/N 11 61 1 717 761) becomes necessary, reimbursement may be claimed under sublet at dealer net price + 30% handling.
