INTRODUCTION

Starting with 1-94 production, all vehicles were equipped with an additional component called the Starter Immobilization Relay. This relay module provided added theft prevention and safety features. The change from the previous added circuit was to meet the next level of compliancy of the European Insurance Commission.

At the time of introduction, this feature was coined the term "Electronic Drive Away Protection". In German, this name is "ELECTRONISCHE WEGFAHRSPERRE". This term was assigned the acronym EWS I, being the first version.

COMPONENTS

The Starter Immobilizer Relay was installed on E36, E34 and E31 vehicles. It is located as follows:

E36 = In the relay carrier to the left of the Steering Column.
E34/E31 = A pillar above the footwell kickpanel speaker.

Though the Starter Immobilization Relay was the only added component, modifications to the following components were necessitated to incorporate this system:
- General Module
- Lock Cylinders
- Engine Wiring Harness
- The front section to the main harness.
