Cylinder Head/Valve Train
Cylinder Head/Valve Train:
The cylinder head of the M52 is similar in design to the M5OTU. The combustion chambers and intake ports have been redesigned to optimize air flow and burn rates in the combustion chamber.
Two additional ports are cast into the exhaust side of the head for the secondary air injection air flow to enter the exhaust system. Port sealing is provided with the exhaust manifold gaskets.
Cylinder Head/Valve Train:
The camshafts are essentially the same design as the M50, however additional material is cast between the cam lobes. This improves the balance of the shafts for smoother operation at lower engine speeds.
Valve Assembly:
Hydraulic Bucket Tappets:
The hydraulic bucket tappets and valve springs have been modified to reduce weight.
The tappets are now smaller in size at 33 mm instead of 35 mm (previous M50). Conical shaped valve springs allow single springs to be used thus further reducing weight.
These measures account for reduced fuel consumption and reduced running noise.
