PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
Correction of Key Cutting Codes

MODEL:
E36, E38, and E39

Situation:
During the production process the key cutting code for each car is logged so that this code may be accessed in the future if it should become necessary to make a new key for a customer. BMW has determined that codes for certain cars were not logged properly during production, and that they will be unable to supply a key cut to the proper code should a customer require one.

In order to minimize inconveniencing the customer, BMW is conducting a campaign to enter the correct codes into the file before the customer actually needs to have a new key made.

Vehicles Affected:
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number lists shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered the only deciding factor. For your convenience there are two lists of affected chassis numbers shown. The first list is sorted in retailer number order to provide you with a quick reference to determine if any of the affected cars are being serviced at your facility. The second list is sorted in chassis number order.

Procedure:
If one of your service customers has an affected vehicle, explain to them the problem with the missing key code, and ask them to provide you with one of their master keys. Please note that wallet or valet key is not acceptable. Fill out a copy of the information form, and send the form and master key via overnight service to the address on the form.

The master key code will be deciphered at the PDC and entered into the BMW system. The key will then be overnighted to your Retail Center, and the customer should be without their key for only a few days.

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 217. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-090) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 217 printed on the label and,

c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Information:
Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via Campaign Entry.
