**SUBJECT:
Service Action to Recode General Module**
**MODEL:
E38 (7 Series), E39 (5 Series). Vehicles produced 8/98 to 11/98**
**Situation:
With the trunk lock set to the horizontal, or "Valet" position, the vehicle electrical system may not go into consumer cut-off on some E38/E39 vehicles produced between 8/98 and 11/98. This can result in a discharged battery when the vehicle is parked.**
**Cause:
Software error in the General Module (GM III), SW 2.1, Bus Index either 07, or 09.
Note:
A Bus Index of F7 or F9 indicates that the vehicle is not affected.**
**Affected Vehicles:
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DOS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

Correction:
Reprogram the General Module using DIS V 17.0, or later.
Procedure:
1. Connect vehicle to DIS, or MoDIC loaded with DIS V 17.0, or later.
2. Select "Coding/programming".
3. Select "ZCS Coding".
4. Select "E38", or "E39" (as appropriate).
5. Select "5. Service Measures
6. Select "3. General Module".
7. Follow on-screen prompts to reprogram the General Module.
Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 248. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-120) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 248 printed on the label and,
c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
**Warranty Information:
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through campaign entry.
