Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Steptronic System Function - 850Ci

Steptronic System Function - 850Ci:

When the lever is placed in the manual gate, the transmission initially adopts the current gear as engaged during automatic operation. The transmission will stay in this gear until the selector lever is tapped forward or rearward to initiate a gear shift.

The manual shift range is limited from 2nd to 5th gear with the exception of the engine warm up cycle (during the first two minutes after cold start, the AGS provides first gear as a selectable gear for catalyst warm up time reduction).

The instrument cluster indicates the current mode of operation.

- While in the automatic mode, the cluster displays the position of the shift lever (P, R, N or D).
- While in the manual mode, it displays an "M" followed by the manually selected gear.

Requests for not plausible shifts are only displayed momentarily, display then returns to current gear.

Automatic functions in the Manual Mode
- Engine Overspeed Prevention:
To prevent over revving the engine, AGS will upshift automatically to the next gear just prior to the max engine cutoff speed.

- Kickdown: If plausible, AGS will automatically shift down to the next lower gear when the kickdown switch is depressed (even to first gear).

- Decelerating: If in 5th gear and coasting to a stop, AGS will automatically downshift to 4th gear at approximately 31 MPH and then to 3rd gear at approximately 19 MPH. The automatic downshift allows for an acceptable gear when re-accelerating.

- Not plausible gear requests: Un-allowed gear requests are ignored by the AGS. For example; in the case of requesting an extreme downshift to 2nd gear at high road speeds, the AGS will maintain the current gear.
