Range Selector Switch

Range Selector Switch

4 Wire Systems - (All except A5S 360R)

The range selector switch is located either in the center console next to the shifter or mounted directly on the external case of the transmission on the selector rod. The switch is provided power and switches the power through specific wires to the TCM depending on the range selectors position.

The TCM determines seven range selector positions from the four wires:

4 Speed Transmissions = P, R, N, D, 3, 2,1
5 Speed Transmissions = P, R, N, D, 4, 3, 2

The EGS control unit module determines the position of the selector from the series of "coded" high/low signals produced by the selector switch.

With older systems the instrument cluster also receives the input signals for range display. In certain cases, the circuit to the instrument cluster or the instrument cluster itself could impair the signal to the TCM. Additionally, the switch could be out of adjustment causing the electrical signal to be out of synchronization with the manual valve.

Always consider this when troubleshooting.

5 Wire System - A5S 360R

The range switch of this transmission uses an additional wire in its coded signalling. Additionally, the range switch is located inside the transmission and requires no adjustment.
