M52/MS41.1

528i - 2.8 Liter, M52 Engine

The M52 - 2.8 liter engine will be installed in the 528i. The engine is carried over from the 1996 E36 and conforms to the 1997 requirements for OBD II emission control standards. The Siemens MS 41.1 engine management system is used for fuel injection and ignition control with minor changes to adapt it for use in the E39. Detailed information on the M52 and MS 41.1 systems is found in the 1996 E36 introduction handouts.

The MS 41.1 system in the E39 does not require the purge system monitor found in the E36 - 328.

The 528i can be ordered with either the 5-speed standard transmission with direct drive 5th gear or the A4S 270 R automatic transmission.

The A4S 270 R - four speed transmission will be used with AGS adaptive electronic transmission control. AGS control is new for the A4S 270 R transmission and follows the features and control found on the A5S 560 Z transmission installed in the 540i.

The 270 R transmission complies with the OBD II standards for emission control monitoring and fault code storage for scan tool readout.
