IKE - High:

BASE:

The E39 will be equipped with two different versions of Instrument Cluster - Driver information systems. The E39 - 528i will be equipped with the base version Bus system/wiring harness, while the E39 - 540i will come with a high version Bus system/harness.

The high variant of the wiring harness is similar to the E38 system with minor changes made for functional changes with control modules.

The base variant of the wiring harness differs from the high version as follows:

- The I and K busses are grouped together as one bus called the "K" bus.
- All control modules that were connected to the "I" bus are connected to the "K" bus on the 528.
- There is no separate IKE control module for the instrument cluster/board computer functions.
- The instrument cluster/board computer electronics are integrated into the cluster display unit.

The E39 continues to make use of single wire, multi-information bus communication systems. They offers the advantages of:

- A high level of reliability
- Reduction in the size of the harnesses
- Multiple utilization of sensor and signal inputs
- Expanded functions through increased data flow
- Flexibility in configuring the systems
- Reduction in cost
- Expanded diagnostic capabilities
